On the way to work this morning I noticed that the exhaust note of the car is a fair bit deeper than normal, and sounds a bit like the chavvy backbox I had on my other 306 (this one's a standard exhaust). It did not sound like this yesterday, and it was like this on the way home as well.

The engine pulls just as well as before as far as I can tell, and the revs climb just the same, but seem to be a tiny bit slower to fall (although I could be imagining this part).

Over the weekend I'm going to have a proper look around the car to see what this might be, my first thought was that my cat is on the way out and the inside has collapsed, thus leaving much less of a restriction in the exhaust. I could hear no rattling though.

At this stage, if anyone has any ideas what this might be, or anything else I should check in order to narrow the cause down then your advice would be much appreciated.

Will update with findings once I've had a proper play around.

Thanks!

Okay so probably a hole/leak somewhere.
Yep, was planning on having it up on stands and having a good look over the whole exhaust.

    Thanks.

Look at the rear of the cat a few inches in front of where it joins to the mid-section, there is a weakness there. This went with very little warning on mine, and got worse very quickly to the point where it was split almost all the way around - you could see daylight through the split - and the noise was deafening, all within about 40 miles. Got it welded and it is holding up so far but replacing cat time is coming I reckon.

Exact same happened to me literally one week after it passed an mot.

Crazy how fast they split when they do

I've been really busy lately, this is what has happened though.

I'll hopefully be getting it welded up soon.

Sounds more like an air leak around filter area.

It is definitely the cat splitting away from the centre section. I can see the split and feel all of the air coming out of there, there's barely any coming out of the end of the exhaust anymore!

This happened to me once, 5 minutes later the whole thing came apart and started sparking along the ground through the town centre. Joy. Doh

I was on the motorway when mine went. Having only just put a brand new OE centre section on I was not keen on it dragging its @r$e around the M25. Luckily it held together long enough to get it somewhere to sort it.

I got it welded up for a contribution to the coffee fund and it's still holding out.

    Good result.

    glad to hear its sorted.

for future reference, if you place your hand over the exhaust tip to block it (wear gloves if hot) any holes (even tiny ones )will prounouce themselves quite clearly with a hissing noise.

I tried this and a snake bit me. Maybe I'll turn my engine on next time I hear a hissing noise

Good tip, in this case the hole was very, very easy to find as the cat split away from the exhaust the whole circumference of it. LOL
