I kid you not

Some bright spark decided it would be a great idea, including the local police apparently, to allow Wetherspoons to open a pub on the Xtra services somewhere on the M40.

Now for food fine, their food is decent and cheap, and if the competition drives the insane prices in motorway services down it's great.

But they will sell beer, and one of the quotes I read from their manager was, "we wont be preaching to people about drink driving, we will leave it up to them" 8 am til 1am are their opening hours!

I lose faith I really do.

I heard yesterday there is to be a knife amnesty and none will ever be sold again as some people just can't be trusted to use them soley to prepare food.

    Sweet!
Last time I was in one of these classy establishments, I ordered a bottle of rosé, four jeiger bombs and a pint of lager. I was actually in mild shock when it only cost eleven pounds something.
They used to do four jeiger bombs for a fiver, I think it's a tenner now, though.
    Jeiger bombs on the M40!!!!

Wetherspoons food is rotten, its the ONLY place I will not eat from.

I can see both sides of the argument.

Obviously people will now have the added temptation of a cheeky pint on their travels but really, closed container alcohol is for sale at these service stations anyway so if they really want a drink, not having a bar will not deter them!

If you are being safe rather than sorry then yeah, it should not be there.

But for all of us moral upstanding and law abiding citizens, exercising a bit of self control when presented with the opportunity will go a long way.

There will be idiots that abuse it I'm sure.

Personally it makes no difference to me as I try not to step foot in those horrible s**t holes!

I think its a stupid idea, not because of the booze or anything, its just a s**t place for a pub.

Who honestly stops for a sit down meal on the motorway? Not that many I would imagine. Generally, when you are on the motorway, you are commuting, or travelling for a purpose, not out for a Sunday jaunt.

The only customers it will get will be truckers and perhaps bikers.

If they installed a cinema or bowling alley etc. Next to it, that may work.

Personally I don't see the problem and I'm sure they will do ok out of it. I dread to think what the cost of a pint will be though.

Same with normal pubs, you can drive to a pub, park up and have a beer, then drive home if you choose.

I don't see the difference, it's people's choice at the end of the day, you will always get someone who gets leathered in a pub then tries to drive home, whether that be in the countryside or on the M40...

I guess my issue is purely the drink driving angle and the promotion of it by the powers that be
    .
Just comes across as a bit two faced when they are sending out adverts all the time before Christmas (guess when this one opens!) then allowing literally anyone on our most dangerous and high speed road type to be tempted! Lots of people drink with a meal, and though it likely wont affect the vast majority, the temptation is right there and off you go up the slip road

OK its a bit nanny state, but surely its the last place you would think would be great for a pub! As a mate said to me its like some bloke pitching up selling syringes and tin foil outside a drug rehab centre!! (well a little bit like)

Statistically, motorways are actually the least dangerous

I actually drove past an off licence yesterday. I couldn't believe people could put alcohol shops where people can see cars. My car looks better after a pint anyways
