Hi

thought i would start a thread about my rallycross car for anyone interested or who has good advice.

The Car when i bought it..... it has been a rallycross car since the early 90's and won quite a few championships over the years as a stockhatch then supermodified.

First race day at Lydden

It rained and rained but had a good first heat then in second heat the engine let go big time.

Valve head snapped and smashed the head and block so engine was scrap

New engine sourced standard GTI6 motor with 70k on it .....No

Installed engine and found that the head gasket was blowing 2 days before race day so mad panic to rebuild the top end..

Got it ready in time so off to Mallory

Had a great day of racing even when running a standard engine and had some pannel damage when chasing the british champion and he decided to stop in front of me ......Dunno

Won the B final easily and got on the back of the A final grid

Made a good start and then the front ball joint snapped on the first corner so that was it for the day....

Rebuilt the suspension and repaired the bodywork ready for Knockhill

Bought some GTI6 front disc and fitted them with race pads what a diffrence even just testing on our industrial estate.

Car tested on the saturday on the industrial estate stages and ran great so off up to Scotland for racing.

Got up early Sunday and started the car Shock it would only run on 2 cylinders so new plugs , new coil pack , new leads and checked all the wiring but still no diffrent so did practice on 2 cylinders so i would quailfy to race

Checked every thing again tried more new parts checked fueling but no good so packed up and watched the racingSad

Current plan is

Fit a Rotrex super charger and steel bottom end running throttle bodies and fabricated air chamber connected to a huge intercooler, new Omex 600 ecu and new wiring loom to be installed.

To make way for the supercharger and intercooler the radiator is getting moved to the back.

Lots of work and dosh so next race will be Lydden in August and i am looking for 350 Bhp + from this conversion...

Spoke to Rich at Lynx and he has been very helpful with advise so thanks bud.

Cars ready to start mocking up the supercharger and intercooler then once completed i will rip out everything and fit the new steel bottom end.

Yh, I look forward to seeing this to. Was thinking about it before, but I couldn't see the gains would be worth the money adding the bodies to a charged engine.

There won't be gains, but he's got them already so why not use them?

May not be power gains, but surely still get some better throttle response, and could custom map it better surely having ITB's?

(Waits for Jim to come along and prove me wrong again Laugh)

Only pain in the arse bit would be getting everything to line up, ie. Custom inlet plenum with the charger and aux setup.

Would be good to see.though, never seen it done myself. Sure it has been though.

Hi

Thanks for all the comments, my thinking around using the itb's is that if i fit a dump valve then the charge pressure in the air chamber will stay high so when i open the throttles it will have boost pressure built up so instant power as looking at some of the vid's of the Lynx set up the hoses are sucked in so it must be vacuum in there due to the throttle body being closed so there must be a transition pause when opened.

I also want to go with Omex unit and Rich advised to try this so i will not argue with him .....

Will be interesting to see how it works with launch control and full throttle gear changes

Hi

Thanks for the offer for the engine /box but i have a new bottom end with steel rods and forged pistons and i have a spare head that i am getting built up so should have everything i need.

Just reading my manual for the omex and it says it has the provision for a Knock sensor, i heard that the GTI6 standard engines have these fitted is that true and if so where is it or what is it as i think it might be tempted to fit one

Sad

Yeah the standard engine has a knock sensor, it should be somewhere on the front of the block above the oil filter roughly between cylinders 2 and 3. It's like a black round sensor with a lead running from it and a bolt through the middle from memory. Smile

Nice project, I'm wanting to do similar with ITB's and a 'charger but keep spending money elsewhere on the car. Doh

EDIT: Circled the knock sensor for you. Smile

I think you're confusing yourself re. the dump valve. It will mean there's no pressure in the plenum rather than built up pressure, that's the point of it.

The pipes being sucked in on the videos will be due to the throttle body being fitted before the charger, yours will obviously be after. If you don't fit a dumpvalve your theory will sort of be correct, although the charger, throttle body plates and pipe work won't appreciate being battered by ever increasing boost when you let your foot off the throttle.
