Hi guys,

Had a valeo clutch fail at around 15,000 miles because a rivet fell out. Have the box off and while I was cleaning the bits of clutch out I noticed these....

Doesn't look amazing, is this something that can be ignored? Need to get the box back on this eve ideally so any response would be very much appreciated!

That's right where the pinion shaft bearing is supported against the diff, takes a LOT of forces, I would investigate further...

Doesn't look that bad, put it back on. Smile Still it leaves me wondering what did cause that crack.. I don't believe that clutch failure had done it. But if you need it back on the road, then there is nothing else to do atm.

I have an old box I could put on, it's just as I'm sure you're aware changing the box is an arsehole and I don't want to do it twice more if I can help it. welshpug there are a couple more aswell, just visible on top pic running up the left of the raised triangle and meeting up with the big crack, which isn't overly clear there. Anyone seen this failure mode before?

Ok think I will stick my old box on, if nobody can trivialise the big cracks in my gearbox I don't fancy it much to be honest

they look too much like real cracks to me than casting marks.

How do I go about working it out? See if I can sand them off? If they are casting marks presumably wont be very deep?

Was your valeo clutch a proper one or a cheapy one? There are apparently two types...

Sand them off and see if they are actually cracks for certain, but I've got two spare boxes and they are both covered in those sort of marks.

Cheers gents, sanded them back and they are indeed casting marks. Feel a bit of a tool now! The clutch I got through LukeJenks when he was at Peugeot so presume a good valeo one. Have a valeo from factors this time, how do I check if it is a crap one!? Although it is basically in now!

This, have a careful check around but there's a few on the engine blocks too where the casting cools too quickly.

edit: Never mind, too slow.
