Yeah but an E92(?) is hardly a comparison for a 90's hatchback is it? If I hopped in to a DB9 I'd also be tempted not to look back.

If, however, I had an E36 I'd be very tempted to look back. I'd look back longingly infact. I'd probably buy the 306 flowers and say 'I'm sorry'.

Nothing screams council estate quite like an E36.

Well yeah that's kind of my point. I'm comparing £1500ish E36s and E46s to a similarly valued 306, obviously I'd rather have a brand new M3 but unless I was renting one for the weekend I don't think I could get one for that somehow.

I find it funny how people say that a BMW won't be as much fun to drive as the 306 currently I have a high boost Rallye and an e46 m3 and I'd say the BM is deff better fun than the Rallye, I had an e36 3.0 m3 before I bought and charged the Rallye and to be fair I wish I had never ploughed all that money into the 306 don't get me wrong it's truly awesome but I'd take the m3 out over Rallye any day!! Also your clearly not trying hard enough if you think the BMW is slower round the twisties you just need to grow a set!

At 2500 I'd be tempted to buy one and run it as long as I could without having to spend a pound on it. Which going by your tyre wear calculator Rikky - I think I'd have a good weekend with one.

I'd buy a E30, E46 or E90 but not a E36. Thought they were ugly the day they were launched and I still do.

Running costs with any car this age is all about history - a clean one owned by some old bloke who got it serviced on time and is up to date will cost little to run. On the other hand a car a bit frayed around the edges that has been thrashed about on a shoestring without any money spent on it for ages will cost plenty, especially when you are doing maintenance deferred by the previous owner.

I'm looking at ones with a FSH that seem cared for. There are a surprising amount of them around for £1000 to £2000ish.

I'm sure it would, but when I bought my 306 (now written off by some idiot woman) it was pretty much the best thing I could afford. I have recently found that some 3-series can be had for similar money, and was wondering how those compared to the '6 at the same price.

Even if I could find an extra £1000 to buy an M3, there's no way I'd be able to afford to insure one given my age.

He's right, insurance shouldn't be that much of an issue, I've been running a 6 fully comp since 18, and had an EVO III at 21. None of this broke the bank.

M3 is easily achievable if you want it, just gotta find the right deal. Thumbs up

I'm 21, but I got my license in Germany. I had to swap it for a UK license, but when insurers ask I have to disclose that I haven't always been living in the UK (premium increase), I'm a student (premium increase), and only have 1 year's ncb despite having had my license for 3 years this month, as my first year and a bit was a named driver abroad which counts for nothing, second year was driving in the UK with no claims, and then I used my 1 year's ncb and being 21 to get insured on a '6 which was still really rather expensive.

Even if insurance would be reasonable (which it almost definitely wouldn't be given that admiral's quotes on normal 3 series tend to be higher than my '6s one), I don't have an extra £1000 to buy an M3.

I'll just wait until I leave university and have a job (I hope) and I'll be nearly 23 with more ncb hopefully, which should allow me to insure and afford something nice.

Pretty much, also my atypical insurance details usually lead to insurers disliking me.

Suffice to say, buying and insuring my 306 was at the absolute upper limit of my budget, and was probably the best car I could get for that money as well in terms of fun. I was wondering if a similarly-priced 3 series would be as interesting as a replacement, seeing as how decent 306s are a bit scarce, especially at the price I paid.

I've found a local crash repairs company that I'll be asking for a quote to fix my 306 though, and probably dicking about with it a bit more myself as well.

Around £1200ish fully comp for this year for the Ph.2, Ph.1 is cheaper to insure.
Most "normal" 1.6L cars like focuses were around £900ish so the way I see it is that it's an extra £300 to drive I car I love

the m3's will bite you big time if you try to run them on a budget too, i bought my blue e36 3.2 m3 evo for ~9k in 2006 and spent a fortune on it and considering it was a VGC example with excellent history i dread to think what a cheap example would have cost me

insurance was about £2k on it when i first got it but dropped by the 4th year of owning it to about £1200. likewise my e46 m3 was about £1200 but a much newer car and worth a lot more

i still pay £600 on a 306 hdi Erm? so insurance has always been an issue here, but that's life

LOL Everyone was quoting me 750-900 on my 1.1 106, 106 gtis were almost as much to insure as a 306 gti-6 and somehow it seems that 106 gtis are all advertised at way higher prices!

i'm in the process now of getting another car. well, it's purely for the mrs, because i don't need one for the week whereas she does. i'm going to try and squeeze 2 cars out of our budget and get exactly what i recommended to stay away from above - a cheap e36 m3 evo LOL really miss my old estoril blue one. if i can get enough for her bmw part-ex'd against something else i'll do it and let you know when i'm bankrupt so you can say 'you told yourself so' LOL

LOL It's not that I don't want an M3, it's that I'd also rather like to eat food and live in a house for the next year as well as owning a car. Thumbs up

Good luck finding a nice one!
