Cheers again everyone. I will ask them to check as I thought it can't be right. And agree approx £1k odd to repair if you know where to get the parts etc (thanks to your guys on here and Carl C)

The engineer came over to see the car on my drive but I wasn't there and I was told he just reallly took pics then took them back to assess the damage.

I cant see anything damaged other than what you can all see. ALL panels are straight and look ok except front and bonnet. Wings are both un touched though.

Going to email them now for a second opinion as a lot of you experienced guys seem to think Cat B is an error.

Really?

According to the appropriate form (and the government's advice page) transfers and retentions still require a valid MOT.

https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/retaining-a-registration-number

When dealing with write-offs it's much easier to retain a private plate if you don't buy the wreck back. The DVLA do 'random' inspections on transfer and retention applications, and a vehicle with a write-off marker will almost certainly trigger the criteria for an inspection, meaning you have to get the car down to a DVLA office.

If the insurer is disposing of the wreck then they just confirm to the DVLA that they've agreed to let you keep the plate, and after you've sent the form off with a copy of the engineers report and the approval letter from the insurer, and the DVLA and the insurer they take care of everything else provided the insurer hasn't yet disposed of the wreck.

from DVLA site

Both vehicles should be currently taxed. However, if the vehicle that currently has the registration number is not taxed, you can still apply as long as:
the tax disc has run out in the last 12 months
there’s no break between the date the tax disc runs out and the start of the SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification)

Yes, I haven’t just read something off the net, that’s from experience. I thought you still had to have an MOT on the vehicle too.
Last year a mate bought his sisters Discovery with no MOT due to rust (shocking...) and debated on fixing or braking. I advised they repaired it, to MOT it so she could transfer her private plate she so desperately wanted to keep. She phoned the DVLA and was able to transfer the plate to her Range Rover due to the time period of the MOT expiring.

I guess that they had to change it with the law about SORNing non insured cars.

I was offered just under £1300 for the car today. I have not accepted as I believe it to be worth more to me and had I of sold it I believe I would have easily been able to sell it for at least £2k. The value given was excluding the LPG conversion too which I have to claim seperately and reading 66/03 OF THIS WEBSITE it looks like an interesting case to say the least that I will get compensation for my LPG conversion, especially as its only about 6 months old.

Got a few things to do andd further negotation over the agreed value of the car. Also asking for a second opinion on the Cat B which as some have stated should really be Cat D or C.

    Fingers crossed all goes well...

Best start breaking it- if its a B its never going back on the road.

How do they make the categories?

If its monetary only then I'm not surprised its B, worth 1300 book, 6000 repairs.

I feel your pain. Stepping back from the Enthusiast in all of us, the insurance company wont give a stuff what you think it would fetch to fellow enthusiasts, they will view it as a 12 year old 2.0 petrol french hatch.

£1300 ish is well over book value (what the trade see as its worth), and i hand on heart think you will really struggle to get £2000 from any insurance company.

All you can do is keep fighting. Make sure you have lots of pics to back up how clean it was and try and prove it wasnt a s**tter.

    Best of luck JammaThumbs up

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but I got admiral to give me what I paid for the car when I bought it by telling the woman to look at autotrader. Their original offer wasn't enough to buy the cheapest on there, which was the same year and colour as my '6 but had 129k on it, whereas mine had 78k.

It is in the insurer's responsibility to reinstate you to the position in which you were in before the vehicle was damaged. They pay out "market value", which is always an industry valuation, and they'll argue that it's accurate etc. however if you can demonstrate that the amount they've offered you isn't enough to buy a similar example then it may help your case.

Sorry if any of this has been said before, good luck.
