Does anyone know if there was a change in manufacturer or design of the rear callipers on the GTi-6's throughout the years, or if the callipers on the back of HDi's are different? The handbrake mechanism on my near side calliper failed so I replaced the calliper with one from a HDi (the disk, pads and pad carrier remained unchanged) and cleaned up the sliders on both sides before the MOT, during which it tested right on the limit of balance on the handbrake as the new calliper wasn't stopping as hard.

I'm wondering if there was a design change which means the handbrake lever is pulled further for the same amount of braking force applied on the callipers fitted to cars built later on.

Can't say I've noticed a difference to be honest, the ones on my
Hdi look and work the same as my 6. And Ive recently had to replace both the ones on my 6 with calipers from a 206 gti180 lol as both nipples were siezed and snapped off.
The handbrake lever arms are different on the 206 callipers but they still fit the 6 ok and seem to work.

Are you sure you blead it properly? If not duff caliper. Also unless you've got brand new disks and pads 306's only scrape through on handbrake efficiency every time I do an mot. Mine holds very well on hills if your stopped but if you pull the handbrake on while driving along it does vertually nothing which is why it nearly fails the mot brake roller test.

The disks and pads are in decent shape as are the cables. The braking force wasn't weak, just uneven. It's all definitely bled properly, but that shouldn't affect it on the handbrake surely? I did give the 2 callipers a once over before I fitted the new one and couldn't see any physical differences which is why I didn't think anything of it when fitting. Are the handbrake cables the same length on these? Just ruling that out in case it's got 2 left hand cables or something.

cables are different left to right, there are different piston sizes.

Hmm. ok. Might just live with it for now then fork out on refurbished callipers all round then. Can't end up with mismatched/worn parts that way I suppose.

orly LOL

pull back the dust cover and check the piston size, IIRC its something like 15% more area on the Sport spec caliper over a 205 and lower spec 306's, the bit that contacts the pad is the same on all.

I'll get it up on the ramps tomorrow and have a look then. It came off a HDi being broken on pug306 but I didn't think to check if it was a "sport" DTurbo or just a meridian or something so it could be that. Driving normally, even under hard braking I definitely can't feel any sort of pulling left or right and I'm usually pretty good at noticing if anything's not quite right once I'm behind the wheel.

As said cables are different lengths. But you could find one is stretched more than the other could be the cause.

naah, stretch will be accounted for by the quadrant thingy on the lever

The rear pistons should be 32mm diameter which they are on a '6' and HDi. Yes

As above, there was an odd ball caliper with a 30mm piston but the only 2liter it was on was the early S16.

Check the bias valve and the sliders.

H/brake on mine was on the limit with new pads and good discs in it.

I figured it out as 14 % increase.

THen had a look over servicebox:

Phase1 - RS engined vehicles used 4401 A2/3, all others used 4401 61/2, both listed as Bendix.

phase2 - all use 4401 A2/3, listed as Bosch, these I know are 32mm.

205/309 listed as 4401 61/2, bendix, same as 106, but listed there as bendix-bosch, this I know is 30mm.

looking at the 206, all listed with the 30mm apart from the 180, all branded bosch, 32mm.

Oddly the ZX is listed as 32mm for the RFY and RFS engined cars, even with the smaller front brakes, but the 1.6 1.9 and TD used 30mm.

All xsara's used 32mm, Citroen's RFS models used different pads, Estate 306 used different pads but the RFS didnt.
