Pretty damn cold tonight. Have any of you gone down the winter tyres route? I've never really had any issues getting about in the 6 when it's snowed, but I do have a spare set of wheels in my shed now which I could wrap in winter tyres. Do they really make your car more capable when it's cold or is it a bit of a gimmick for front wheel drive cars?

Put it this way, you can brake without the car locking up. You can get yourself through and out of deep snow. They're a s**t load safer than summer tyres and I wouldn't hesitate buying them for any vehicle come winter

What's the cost like per tyre for winter tyres, never looked into it really. Are budget variants still an improvement on good summer tyres?

Anywhere from 35+VAT for remoulds or £100 for named.

I have some Continental TS830's and they're fantastic! REALLY good.

Last year, I tried some Insa-Turbo remoulds, the cheapest I could find. Still, really good! Maybe not quite as much stopping confidence as the Conti's gave, but at half the price, they're fantastic!

just put 4 winter tyres on the BMW, brand new smaller 15" alloys (originals are 16's) with new Dunlop winter tyres. best part of £600 but if they get my mrs to work and back for a couple of months that'll be good LOL roads are shocking the way she goes and it's not even bad yet in the scheme of things

It's ridiculously cold outside tonight. Yes

I was outside in the garage tinkering with the '6' earlier and it even felt a bit parky inside the garage which is warm. LOL

Best car I've ever driven in the snow is my ex's 1.1 saxo. It never got stuck, and always ploughed through thick snow that other cars were getting stuck in. I always put it down to the p**s thin tyres cutting through the snow, but I'm probably wrong.

This was the same as when my missus had a 1.1 Polo, it was the best car I've driven in the snow.

Meh I've only just started wearing a coat, that's mostly due to the inside of the car being colder when I leave for work than it is outside.

You're half right, look at any snow rally setup Wink

That was my plan, two space savers with some winter tyres on!

Bloody horrible, hate the winter yuck.

Was up at 430 this morning and took a car to the docks, it felt like it got colder the further I got south, even had to scrape the screen again to go home.

Roll on the floods and sun.

It was crazy, the one year. Our old estate was basically on the side of a valley, and all the routes into it were hills. There were cars just left abandend, every where, but the little saxo didn't get stuck once!! It was f**king amazing!!
I remember traveling twenty miles, through back lanes of deep snow, to work with no trouble. I jumped staright into a BMW and got stuck in the car park. s**tty rear wheel drive. LOL

I have a Tipper too, it's a pain in the ass when there's nothing on the back, just endless wheel spinning at every junction.

p**sing freezing this morning at about -5 when i got into the car. Thick layer of ice all over.

Ive just ordered some Michelin PE2's from Camskill as last weds the car was absolutely shocking rolling on the budget crap in the snow and fishtailing on the A12.
Current tyres are about 1mm left of tread but have been the worst tyres ive ever used and will spin up in all weather bar complete dry in almost every gear. The car travels sideways when cornering under speed!

Can concur about thin wheeled cars flying around in the snow. Last year when we had a good foot of snow, went out in my brothers gf's 3 cylinder Seat Ibiza with elastic bands for tyres and it just ploughed through anything. Key is keeping moving!

Here in Luxembourg it is about -10 degrees Celsius. Just got back from work at 7:15pm to find my windscreen f**king frozen inside-out. Never had this before. Waiting 12 minutes for the screen to de-freeze in the cold was f**king annoying.
Is this down to too much moisture inside the car? I imagine it might be due to the snow i carry inside the car... but the carpet feels and looks dry.
Any advice on this fellas?

I remember a few years ago when it snowed heavily there were loads of people abandoning their cars. Me and a mate actually made a point of going out in the 6 locally in the evening to see what was occurring and help some people get moving again. Didn't have any problems with hills or anything. Saw loads of beemers stranded and even a couple of freelanders. God knows why they were abandoned aren't they four wheel drive? Best car I've been in in the snow was my step dads Subaru Legacy estate. That defied physics in the snow on the hills of high Wycombe.

My old one used to, as well. Nothing like scraping the inside of the windscreen and getting a face full of ice because the fans are on full blast. Yes

This weather makes me miss my old impreza. When it snowed that thing was epic! Even on its big, wide summer tires! My 6 does seem pretty w**k in snow though. Sad
