Thanks for your concern, but I don't do much painting, I'll take my chances, but if I have to do more I will invest in a decent mask. Only get one set of lungs.

I'd strongly recommend you do if you're planning on doing much more, I read some real nasty horror stories about people who worked it for years without masks and ended up coughing and spluttering the rest of their lives and could barely walk again, granted they did it as a full-time job.

Do be careful with it, don't really have the time to try and recruit a new forum welder.

Haha, I do try to be careful with stuff like that, I have a friend who's a sprayer, he's a bit older than me at forty two but his health is terrible, and he has this constant thing where it's like he's doing little coughs to clear his throat but can never manage it. f**k that for the rest of your life, mind you he smokes twenty Bensons a day so he can't be that fussed about his lungs.

Yup, that's what it'll do to you. You make sure you're more careful than that, I'd hate to hear you'd died before I had the money to get various welding jobs done by you.

Still, your van will look the nuts.

I've just read that 2 pack paint contains isocyanates which can be absorbed through your f**king eyes and skin!

Balls to that, I'd want a full on suit, let alone mask

Yup, if you do it on a daily basis (and if you stick to the legal requirements, i.e. you're a pro body shop) then you have full body suits, sealed and with full clean-air masks pumping air from outside. You're also not allowed to do it in residential areas because the fumes have to go somewhere, it's very strict where you're even allowed to do it, you can't just have an extractor fan out the back into some other guy's car park.

A lot of places I saw (I had a proper read up on this once) won't even allow their staff to have beards, as it stops the masks sealing properly - clean shaven only so the rubber seals can make proper contact with your face.

I know health & safety can be a bit out of hand at times, but 2-pack paints are a place I think they're pretty justified. I read enough to decide I was never interested in using it, I'd use a basic cellulose (?) paint and just suffer the fact that it wouldn't last as long, because at least I'd be alive to see it.

Prepping the other door has gone much the same, the usual crack in the corner where the quarter light meets the door skin. I decided to repair this one a bit differently as I got a bit too much distortion with the patch method leaving me with a fair bit of filling & sanding to do (which I hate)

Cleaned up, end of crack found and drilled to stop it getting bigger...

Then four holes drilled ready for plug welding and the rusted part of the split was sawn out...

Then I knocked up a patch, curved it and put on a bit of weld thru primer to hold off the tin worm as long as possible...

Next I offered it up, marked it and used a Cleco clip to hold it in place so I could weld it in...

Weldy, weldy, blah blah blah...

Forgot to photograph the dressing down the welds and filling bit but you get the idea.

They actually did! Some body shells were moved from different locations in the factory while still in bare metal however they would get rained on while they were moving them about, letting the rust begin. Also they didn't always degrease the panels inside the cabs, we've had them rot out the whole inside of the roof because all the pain has fallen off behind the headlining! Sloppy c**ts!

Mate those are some impressive skills you have there, fair play. I shall learn to weld one day, tried once when I was about ten and from what I remember I was not great.

Thank you, migs pretty easy if you have a half decent set and good eyesight. The other disciplines require more skill and practice to master. I'd say prep and cleanliness are the most important factors in achieving a good result.

Hah quality Ford build. I always used to wonder when riding to school how a 3 year old Transit had rust-eaten corners missing off the rear doors as they passed me on the bike lol.
