I am going to be restoring two Transits this year, but neither of them will be track focused.

No thank God, ones a Transit mk6 flatbed which will be a relief truck for when the main ones are off the road for service/repairs. The other one is like the one I've just done, only slightly less rotten. Needs the full bed replacing too as its had it.

I'm so lucky.

Here's the current rot box I'm cursed with.

Ends of the sills and the front lower half of the rear arches were holed, same under the front mudflaps too.

And both bumpstops had rusted out their brackets and fallen off allowing the beam axle to smash the rear chassis rails to buggery and fracture them so the sides of the chassis needed cutting out and replacing. I think maybe that using the Transit for launching the Jetski for a couple of summers a while back and exposing it to salt water probably wasn't my brightest move. I'm certainly regretting it now LOL

Same on the other side...

Oh, and for the record, it's brass fukin monkeys down here today Sad

My mate Rich's one is a W, so even older, but sills are fine on that, needed the step welding where the scissor jack goes, under the plastics was full of scottish mud.

Fords paint prep seems to be a bit hit and miss. Underseal is peeling off all over the underside allowing the rot a place to take hold.

Think Ford just assumed that their shoddy workmanship on Transits would perpetuate the sale of new ones, the eternal cycle. Laugh

That certainly seems to be a theme with them, I've never seen so many holes ideally placed to allow water to be able to get into a chassis, there are at least 15 holes in each rear wheelarch, dicks.

Well, it's not a Transit, but it is a van, and it needs work so I suppose it might as well go in the van thread.

Behold, our beloved Caddy van, it's going back to the other branch soon and we like to give things back in better nick than when we got them so Dad said; "Just give it a quick freshen up before it goes back will you? There's a good lad" Dry

Anyway, all the worst of the rust and stone chipping was confined to the rear arches and the bit where the VW Polio stops and the van begins as it were. Also, as all the sign writing in this area was f**ked there wasn't much point trying to mask round it and make life hard for myself (for a change) so off it came.

I had to do something childish with the lettering while I was at it though. 33 going on 12 HeHe!

Then it's the ball aching job of removing ever last bit if adhesive residue left on all the panels but with a razor blade and a solvent soaked rag, it gave up before I did, just.

Then it was sanding and spray time.

The tent came in handy, got the sides on to keep the wind out, and I've got some heaters in there giving the van a chance to dry before Monday.

Practically no runs now its warming up, and one more job closer to being able to get back onto more enjoyable projects
Smile
