Right, I have got the torque setting on the box of the headbolts and the settings from on here BUT

Done the stage 1 - 35nm / 26lb/ft
then the stage 2 - 70nm / 52lb/ft

stage 3 is a 160 degree turn

Now the thing is, the thing is really effin tight, I'm worried they'll snap if I try 90 let alone 160...

However the box has 4 stages not 3...

Stage 1 is the same
stage 2 is the same
stage 3 is to slacken 90degrees and re-torque to stage 2

then stage 4 is the stage 3 of the FAQ one

Now I dont wanna break the bolts off in the head so, what should i do?

man up Thumbs up

I have never snapped a bolt, only the torx bit Laugh my ass off and even then, only when trying to loosen bolts.

I only do the three stage, so 35 70 160.

90degree done but I can barely budge them and the bar I'm using must be 20"

I had a conversation the other day with a trusted mechanic that told me about the loosening stage which is something I have never done or at the time heard of.
I was saying to him how hard I find it to achieve the 160 degrees as he was torquing up an Xsi head and he said I bet you don't loosen them and retorque before doing the final stage and told me this makes it easier apparently.

The last time I did a '6 head I got to 140 iirc and stopped as I could only see it ending up one way Tbh and like you I didnt want to risk snapping a bolt.

I find the same problem as you...Yes

Therefore when I do them I generally do 35nm, 70nm and then about 100 degrees max. Yes
All the heads I have done have been fine with this. Smile

You're just stretching the bolt, it shouldn't get any harder to do - I find once you've done the first 45*, it just turns exactly the same, and you can feel them stretch.

I find it a total bas**rd if you've got an extension on the bar - take all extensions off, just straight on the socket/key if you can.

I know they are stretch bolts, which is why they give you a tolerance when it comes to replacing them, but they just feel so springy like they want to break sometimes...

To be fair, it's not the case that I can't turn them 160 degrees, it's more that they give the 'feel' that they don't want to turn that far and stay in one piece...
