I've just stripped my spare beam... Oxy-Acetylene to the rescue


anyways, are my shafts dead? Dunno

The surface finish really isn't all that bad though? Is it worth polishing it up in the lathe?

that'll make the shaft smaller and cause movement, which would kill the inner bearing quite sharpish.

no idea about sleeving, what I have head of is building the surface back up with weld then machining back down to tolerance, but unless you can carry this all out yourself you're better off just shelling out for some new shafts off ebay or from a dealer.

or get lucky with a donor from a base model 205/309/306 etc, for example I happened upon an E reg 205 base model on Wednesday, popped the arms off in the yard, (no brute force required!!) and they were absolutely mint Big grin

£30, bang on!

I sleeved mine, seem to be standing up to it just fine.

You'll notice the top of the shaft has masses of wear compared to the bottom, as all the load is pressing down on the shaft. If you want to do it really cheap just press out the shaft, then put it in so the bottom is now at the top! Ta da, nice smooth bearing surface!

As said above if you are a skint just spin the shafts 180, will be fine.

I think I'll have to go down that route (180) if I'm to actually do what I want to do, really can't afford replacing the shafts.

I do have another spare, but really don't fancy stripping it as I really don't have the space.

Right, so had a quick chat with my uncle, who has mentioned metal spraying to build it back up, then machine it back to tolerance.

I'm also going to check the price of En19 steel to machine some new'n's

drop bridgecraft engineering a line, they were looking into them I believe.

I doubt it'll be worthwhile you making a couple yourself when you can still buy them easily enough.

We are not going to be producing any shafts unfortunately. Febi Bilstein are now supplying them for £54 a piece which is a very good price compared to eBay/dealer items. We were looking at around £60 each when we priced them.

As people have said if your skint just spin the shaft 180 fit some new seals and put it back together.
