more of an update...

Bleed the system and it behaves itself for a while...

but it doesnt last... I have noticed though the plastic housing just under the filler for the rad has split, its blowing air bubbles so could this cause air to get in and cause air lock?

That sounds like the overflow for the radiator cap, so replacing the rad wont do much, try a new cap but I really doubt it will help Sad

Still sounds more like HG failure to me, especially if the airlocks return shortly after bleeding the coolant.

no its below the overflow, where the neck of the reservoir narrows it looks like its a seperate part originally and joined somehow... its there that its split and leaking

see its not white smoking at all now, no mayo on cap or dipstick
did the test for hydrocarbons with the fluid in the top of the rad too

and the chap that did the test said it would go bright yellow if gone and it changed from blue to a bluey green so he doesnt think its gasket as he said ones he's done before went yellow as soon as rev's applied and mine too ages before it did a thing...

thought I'd leave it a few days before an update so I was sure...

swapped out the rad for a standard spare I had (in fantastic condition surprisingly to me LOL) and put a new genuine thermostat in....

Problem solved... driven it since with not a single temp issue...

Its seeing some love now as I thought I'd have to spend out on it, fresh plugs, oil change with filter, new fuel filter and going to treat it to a KnN replacement... and of course now I know the water system is ok, fresh coolant as just put water in (kept filling with the bleed screws open to remove all rusty water too)

Sounds like it could have been a thermostat issue in the end then...
