I know it is slightly difficult to tell, but is the smoke white, black or blue?

Blue is oil smoke, white is liquid (water/coolant) smoke and black is overfuelling. Yes

If you say it only happens after you potter about and then clears when you give it some beans, it could well be rings.

The reason I say that is because it could be that whilst you are not putting the engine under any strain the rings are not sealing, but then when you open the taps the rings seal against the bores and stop the burning of oil for a while. Have you noticed oil consumption? Dunno

It might be white smoke then and not oil smoke.

If you are topping up the coolant all the time and you can't find an exterior leak, then the coolant has be leaking internally and when it burns it creates the white smoke you see...

Any problems starting the car from a completely cold start? And do you have any pressure if you remove the rad cap after the car has been sitting for a day?

Sounds like it could be getting coolant into the combustion chambers causing a difficulty starting up then, and once started it then burns off the coolant. Yes

If it is that, you have a failing HG. Sad

Unfortunately it is a common sign, yes. Sad

Keep your eye on it, but yes IF it is that it will only get worse before failing completely. Yes

You can get a "sniff" test done as well at a garage...

They will probably only charge you £5 to do it. It comprises of a small kit where they have your engine running and put an instrument into your coolant header tank.

The instrument is filled with a blue liquid. The equipment is "sniffing" to see if you have any hydrocarbons (exhaust gases) in your coolant. If there are, the liquid will turn to a greeny/yellow colour. If not, it will stay blue.

Takes about 10 mins for the garage to perform this test and could put your mind at rest if you have it done and the liquid stays blue. However, going by the info you've given so far, I have a feeling it might turn greeny/yellow. Sad

Another sure fire way of testing, is to drive the car to work in the morning, and then park it up.

Before you go home (I'm guessing it's about 8 hours or so later) open the bonnet and slowly release the rad cap. There should be no sound whatsoever. If you get a massive "hiss" or water comes spraying out at you, it's pretty much a dead cert the HG is well on it's way out. Wink
