after reading loads of threads on here about 'tapper' engines i was worried that mine is 1,
however when i first got the car it only tapped after a good drive out, which made me think that as the oil gets thinner that it could possibly be a lazy tappet,
so i changed the oil to 15/40 in the advice from the a local garage but made no difference.

if i start it up in the morning and it tapps very loud by the time ive had a slow drive to work say 10miles it's quitened down completley.

hope it all make sense does anyone know if it could be the tappets??

Yes mate most likely to be a lazy 1. Depending on how much you know about cars check if the cam has sliped. If none of these then the injectors can tend to make a tapping sound as they get old.

yeah i've already changed the injectors, coil packs and plugs to cure a slight missfire that it had, it's going to get a compression test on friday just to make sure it's not a bent valve but it runs sweet and flys so hoping it wont be that.

so if it's just a lazy tappet whats the best thing to do for it, maybe run some treatment through and see it that clears it or just leave it, it's just really annoying when your sat at a junction or traffic lights and can see people pulling a face at the noise lol

Pretty much mate. Checking the valves you need to spin them in a fixed drill realy

I wasn't aware these engines ever had sticking or lazy tappets. They are very rarely an issue.

indeed, quite rare but can happen.

pop the cam covers off and give the tappets a poke with a non metallic object, see if any move easily.

I got a lazy tappet. Sound like a bent valve sometimes for a couple of minutes when cold but then it goes completely. As said, is rare but can happen. Smile

a good ragging then a quick oil change with decent oil like total Quarts 7000 or 9000 should sort it most of the time,

A compression test won't show up a bent valve on ours. Mine gave good results but had 2 visibly bent valves, you could see on them how they weren't seating.

mines weirdly the opposite of this it normally starts quiet but after a hard drive it then really starts tapping loud, then by the next morning is quiet again, surely there can't be much else top end that can tap apart from valves and tappets is there?
it's just had n oil change to 15/40 and does seem a little bit worse... do you think i would be better going back to 10/40 quartz then?

when it's loud it's there all the time right throught the rev range it just gets harder to hear as the exhaust drowns it out, but after watching a few 'tapper' video's the sound of mine is definatley much louder than those,

like i say it doesnt affect it performance wise but i'm very cautious incase something goes on it

how do i go about getting a video on here do i need to open an account of photo bucket etc?

couldn't get a vid of it tapping but it's now started with another worrying noise, you can hear it most as the camera is near the front grill, like a bearing is going but cant work out exactly where it's coming from, hoping it's not cambelt tensioner of pulleys,
if any one can shed any light on it would be much appreciated
cheers

sorry wrong video its this one:http://s1052.photobucket.com/albums/s444/wayne-o-mac_123/?action=view&current=001.mp4

A video with the bonnet up maybe a good idea Thumbs up the reason it gets louder at the grill is because thats where the engine is

Well as a start you can take off the aux belt then start it to see if its a pulley on there.
