Right then I know its not a 306, but the front suspension setup is fairly similar, the main difference being you can camber adjust at the hub. The front wishbones are attached to a subframe that is square rather than C shaped and is bolted to the body by what look to be rubber damped bolts.

At the moment i've not got a great deal of steering feel using ContiSport 3s - 225/45/17 on standard wheels.

Can I make it better by changing:

1. Spacing subframe front/back and therefore changing wishbone angle
2. Spacing the track rod ends
3. Changing from the standard ARB (uses IPD solid links)
4. Was better after spring rate went up but i'd prefer not to go higher
5. Tyre pressures seem to make little odds and the Contis are the best for feel so far
6. Increasing rear ARB thickness or rear ride height
7. Reducing the PAS pressure somehow - i've driven it without PAS and it didn't make much odds.
8. Try to remove the rubber in the subframe - not simple though I think.

I know it might seem strange but people don't tend to improve the suspension feel on these, just add more power. There is a load more to be had by making it corner better, in fact a diff would be on the cards before more power I think now. Therefore the volvo forums can't really help at the moment!

Cheers

First things first, is the rack rubber mounted, or solid to the subframe?

Assume that it isn't - doesn't look it from Haynes, but have asked the question.
Certainly the older cars are solid mounted but aren't very well attached, as in they flex and come loose. Hoping to find out about mine soon.

pics on tinterweb looks like 4 studs direct to the subframe.

Are there rubber bushes in the steering column?

subframe would probably quite involved but not massively difficult to sort, if you know a machinist...

bigger pulley on the pas pump maybe?

People do polyurethane the front subframe mountings to make them stiffer. No one has re-made the bushes though and bear in the mind the engine is basically entirely bolted to it so I don't want loads more noise. Its not like you can physically move the subframe with a bar with it attached!

Yes, I'd say the contis are the same if not better. Bit cheaper, but not 100% on the wear just yet. Both are awesome!

Yeah it is very heavy on the tyres, But I wouldn't change them as they perform really good, it does have piles of torque though and weighs 2 ton apparently.

1550 iirc, so not too dissimilar, I think the B5254 engine is quite light for its capacity being all alloy.

49mm indeed!

P1 V70 wheels are 43mm offset. Otherwise they don't seem to be easy to get wheels for.

5x108 isnt it? same as a big pug LOL

looking at the 407, that uses similarly deep offsets around 44, apart from one ET35 7x17 Steel wheel.

will 16" wheels fit? 607 uses an ally spare wheel afaik, 7X16 ET 39

They are 7.5" wide and yes 5x108 - oh really same as large Peugeot?! Hmm...

The brakes are 302s at the moment, but only one type of Volvo 16" fit over those, some mega strong Police spec things. Also tyres are cheapish in 225/45/17 so I don't want to change in a hurry.

would think most shallower offset 16+17"s would fit quite easily.

same centre bore!! 65.1mm Shock

quality wheel offset+centre bore linky

I can never remember with offset how it works. If I went to a 20mm offset i'd need 29mm spacers to make it the same? Or is it the other way round?

yup bang on as were talking positive offsets, larger the number closer to the inner wing the wheel goes, smaller number same width = wheel closer to outer arch

I don't know if they're still the same but they used to run a lot of negative scrub on the old Volvo's, so you might not need much to push it back toward neutral.

You can measure it from the strut angle.
