Right, so I'm taking my car to the Nurburgring later this year on a charity run. In the meantime I'm going to spend a bit of money on it to make it track ready.. at the same time I don't want to go overboard as funds aren't unlimited. Being a bit of a newb I was looking for some advice on a decent brake set up, shocks/springs (though I don't want to compromise the handling or ride too much.. a bit of a drop and a bit tighter in the twisties would be nice).. Currently running pretty much standard apart from the exhaust which is stainless to a scorpion back.

Also, pt81 cams.. Do they make much of a difference to the power and where the power band is? Best place to get them fitted and get a remap done? Preferably in the south west somewhere haha.

Anyway, this is her. Deffo could do with a few mm off that height..

and yes, I'm aware of the bubbling on the tints. Had it done a couple of days ago and there's a bit of lift on the dot matrix Thumbs down

I was looking at going between April and June. Looking to see if I can get the local pug dealership n all interested. It's for the meningitis trust in memory of a late friend.

So stock shocks and a strut brace should be ok? It's going to be my first track day, so I'm jumping in at the deep end a bit I guess!

Are there any airfields near you that do track days cheaply? If there are I'd try and get yourself on one of those, within minutes you'll know exactly what needs doing Yes

Tbh without seeing the car it's hard to tell. If the suspension bushes are worn, then changing old for new will make a bigger difference than a strut brace, for example. If it already has good pads, no point changing them; if you find the brakes still aren't up to it you'll need to look at getting some 406 calipers, for example.

The car really is very good to start with and won't generally *need* any upgrades, but might need stock parts replacing if they're knackered. As you're the one who has to drive it, it's kinda up to you what you do to it. If you're happy with how it handles, don't muck about with the handling. If you're happy with the brakes, leave them be. However if you take it out and think "DAMN, these brakes are shot, I would not feel happy caning round the ring in this!", then you've probably answered your own question Wink

30mm drop on Eibach springs with Bilstein shocks is a pretty standard improvement, new bushes all round if required. Decent pads, and you should be all good. To a degree it depends on your driving, your knowledge of the 'ring and how you intend to drive; if you know the track well you'll hardly need to brake, if you don't but want to loon around then you'll completely destroy stock brakes.

Certainly though I'd try it out on track before deciding anything Yes

No need for a brace, they do hardly anything when the bar's are bent and the rubber of the top mount will all move anyway

As said, make sure all your brakes, Steering and Suspension are in good order (Inc beam even if it seems OK)

The one main thing is uprated 'P' bush's, This will do allot more than any strut brace

Cam's you'll find a pain, as they may or may not fit, due to valve clearance, Has the head ever been off?

Mr welsh pug didt you say in another thread the std pads are more than good enough?
I would take it to your local rolling road get them to give it a run. See if its making wat it should be, before getting cams then you know wats happening. You can get them them to advance them them a little to make it a bit more power. Then its how deep you want to dig in your pockets. pads and discs, suspension(i chose bilstein s b6s cause there set an that's it). Pug1off do cam packages.

Take this with a pinch of salt. Obviously track knowledge is invaluable, but dont go out there thinking your nearly exhausted pads will cut the mustard.

But have a great time - Its an awesome place.

Don't bother with cams. Waste of money compared to refreshed suspension and lighter, wider wheels imo. Also rolling road is fairly pointless too, you'll know if its not working right as mpg will be crap or it won't idle, will miss etc etc.

Standard pads aren't going to be good enough on track.

If you feel you want to lower the suspension then this is a good start:
1. Eibach springs and bilstein B8 shocks
2. -25mm on the rear with Hybrid rear ARB

Otherwise:
3. refresh P bushes / wishbones
4. beam mounts, leave rubber imo for the road
5. good tyres
6. new fluids all through - basically a full service!
7. brake pads - all sorts really and its down to your own choice. DS2500 to 1144/55 to RC6 etc etc depending on track use amount.

Do 100 laps of the Nurburgring on Gran Turismo over the next few weeks to get a feel of the layout.

I'd definitely go for some Ferodo 2500 brake pads and probably refresh your brake fluid as well.

haha yea, I've been playing it a lot on Forza.. but to be honest, the layout seems to stick in more from real life footage.

Well, for anyone that's interested I might start a little project thread leading up to the drive there. Thanks for the input.

I'd be tempted to invest in a thermostatic oil cooler too.

If its your first time at the 'ring i reckon it's unlikely that you will be going all out so a fairly standard car in good condition should be up to the job.

The first time i went there was in my standard '6 with Peugeot pads and an oil cooler, i cant remember for definite but i think i was getting fade about 2/3 of a lap in.
Since then i have Ferrodo DS2500 pads in which are a nice pad for fast road use, they dont destroy discs like some do, but if you get them really really hot they tend to leave themselves all over the discs making you think you have warped them.
Last year (3rd time there) i had some ducting from the fog lights to the calipers and had no issues at all with the brakes being too hot.

As others have said though, making sure the car is all nice and sound mechanically is the best thing to do and just take it steady and have fun.

Be careful of the track bug though, once it grabs you you'll never have another spare penny again. Laugh
