I am having a problem starting my track car (for those of you who have read my last project post the engine did manage to start once ... but not since)

When I turn the key the starter is only turning over very slowly – not enough to start.

Voltage across the battery = 12.6v (tried a starter pack as well)
Voltage across the battery when starting = 0.3v

Voltage drop from + battery terminal to starter terminal = 200mV (when cranking) 34mV normal
Voltage drop from - battery terminal to starter casing = 100mV (when cranking) 0V normal

The engine has recently been rebuilt (new rings, shells, etc)
I can turn the engine over manually and there are no ‘sticking’ points – all seems smooth.

I am thinking it is the starter motor, but I would like some second opinions before buying a new one and trying that out. (could it be due to the new rings, compression, bedding in etc???)

Stuart

Yes the battery is earthed in the boot and I have earthed the engine to the chassis in the 2 places where it was originally.

The starter motor casing shows 0.01 ohm resistance to the body of the car – so it looks like a good earth.

dead battery probably, try a jump lead form the negative terminal to the engine block.

OK, I’ve tried a couple more things tonight but still no joy.

Firstly 1 ran a rump lead directly from the negative on the starter pack to the engine block – still slow cranking
Next I ran jump leads from another car (eliminate the starter pack/battery) – still slow cranking, also noticed that it must be pulling some serious current and the lights inside the car dimmed and the jumper cables were nice and warn after only a couple of short goes.

I have managed to borrow another starter motor so I will try that out on Thursday night when I have some more free time. If that does not work I am stumped.

What gauge cable did you use? As this can make a huge difference in the cranking power.

I used 40mm2 cable - I would have thought that should be thick enough?

Thats plenty Yes 35mm2 will take 400 amps for two minutes without issue so your 40mm2 will cope with cranking amps no worries. As long as the connections are all good that is.

Fitting the other starter motor seems to have fixed the problem ... hopefully it will stay that way.

Thanks for everyone's advice Smile
