Hi everyone,

I thought I'd post up some "research" I did while rebuilding my own engine.

SCENARIO:
After rebuilding my engine it began to tap. The cylinder head was removed once again and the valves inspected to see if they were bent.

Do those valves look bent to you? No? WELL YOU'RE WRONG!

When rebuilding my engine, I spun around one of the cams to get it back in time and inadvertedly caused 4 valves to clash; bending 2 of them.

After perilous denial I decided to put the valves in a lathe and check their run out on a DTI.

These were my results. Two valves were out by a fraction of an inch and this was enough to cause the engine to tap.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
Just because valves don't look bent, doesn't mean they aren't, and can still cause quite a tap!

I'd just like to add my 2p's worth on this, not everyone has access to a lathe, i found my bent valves by pushing the valve about 10mm off the seat, then push them back into place, the bent valves made a metallic "tick" when seating obviously due to not seating fully whereas the straight made a nice thud (for want of a better description) when seating, hope this helps! Thumbs up

If you spin them quite slowly in an electric drill, and place a wooden or plastic stick gently against the sealing face, you could feel that amount of runout . ( if you mount the drill well enough you would probably also see it.)
