Ok, I'm trying to fire up my 6 for the first time in two and a half/three years (can't even remember its that long). Anyway, it wont start. There's fuel in it, I can hear the fuel pump running and I've just connected a new battery. Cranks fine but just won't fire. Brand new spark plugs were fitted just prior to the last time it ran. Any ideas?

Old fuel. Daft question, but how would I get new fuel in there? Are the injectors easy to clean?

Old fuel will be well and truly scummed up by now. I'd syphon out whatever's in the fuel tank for a start and fill it with new stuff.

I think the injectors needs to be professionally cleaned, but just flushing new fuel through might be enough to get them working again if you're lucky.

As it needs to be MOT'd etc I need to get it to the garage so I was thinking I might be able to get the AA involved...if they can't start it I might be lucky enough to get towed there. In the meantime I'll try siphoning out the old fuel (two thirds of a tank!) and put some new in

Spot on. Just make sure it's clear tube so you can see when the petrol's about to reach the end, you don't want a mouthful of *fresh* fuel, let alone manky old skankjuice.

i started mine in the garage the other day for the first time since april. wouldn't fire but kept trying to

left it and came back after leaving it on charge for another hour. eventually it fired - literally - firing a massive flame out of the back and melting the coat hung over a bike propped up behind my car

not my coat, not my problem

The fuel won't be your problem, even after that time it should still start and run. I've seen fuel left for twice as long as that, and it's been ok.

It may not run great, but it should at least fire.

I would check to see you actually have spark.

It's been known for the immobiliser to lose it's memory if it's not been powered up for a long time, I would check this isn't keeping the ECU in a locked state and stopping the spark.

its really difficult to see...I took a spark plug out and connected it back to the coil pack and then turned the engine over but I couldn't see anything. Should I be able to see a distinct spark from the end of the plug? It didn't feel like the plug was really sitting well in the end of the rubber 'tube' part of the coil pack.

Or have I done this completely wrong!?

are you contacting the plug within a metal surface? you should see the spark and you could, if wanted, get a good belt off it using a spanner or molegrips LOL
