Earlier on today I was sat at the traffic lights and I could smell smoke very strongly, I flicked the heater fans on and opened the vents and smoke poured in Shock

So I quickly pulled over and turnt the engine off but was unsure if I should open the bonnet. Anyway I thought f*ck it, opened it up and the smoke appeared to be coming from behind the heat shield and a lot of it!

Luckily I had a 10mm spanner handy so I cracked off the nuts
and pulled the heat shield out to find 2 holes had been burnt into it where it has been resting on the mani. So I'm guessing at some point in the cars life it been removed and poorly refitted and I noticed the 2 nuts that would secure the bottom of the heat shield werent there which was allowing it to rest on the manifold. Obviously I'm glad it didn't catch fire!!!

I don't have a spare heat shield to hand so I cut away the bit of burnt shield and re attached it an secured it properly and so far so good I'm guessing it's only protecting the heater matrix hoses from melting and catching fire?

Good job you stopped - im the sort of tool that would carry on driving in the hope of creating a fire big enough to roast marsh mallows on

is it essential this is fitted?
as mine is off (car on stnads) and i was wanting to leave it off until cars been tested and then i can put the cat back on, it just makes it a bit easier to tighten the cat to manifold bolts up from above.

It'll be a pain to fit once the exhaust is in place. and I wouldn't want to go too far without it. that manifold chucks out some serious heat so be careful.

I guess Peugeot put it there for a very good reason. From my house I got 2 mins down the road before it started smouldering due to it rubbing on the mani Shock Just think what a long drive on a hot day without it would do.

I don't fancy reading any R.I.P the 6 threads appearing Wink

Yeah, that manifold is a b*tch when it comes to heat radiating off it. I made a custom heat shield out of a steel plate for my 405, without it the friggen seam sealant starts to boil when its pushed a little!
I guess its down to the thin walled tubular nature of the manifold?Crazy Its also packed nice and tight together...
