Lol. Shorter and stiffer. Doh

Anyway, quick question, assuming the same thickness of spring, would a shortened spring with only, say, 6 coils, work out as a similar stiffness to the standard springs with 8 coils? Side by side they just look like they've had two coils cut off, spacing is identical.

If so, would a lowering spring that needed more stiffness have to have more coils? If you stick a standard spring rate spring on a car that just has less coils it'll bottom out i presume?

Does any of what I just typed make sense? Dunno

Less coils = higher spring rate for same wire diameter/OD

How does that work? Doesn't that imply lopping a couple of coils off a standard spring would make them stiffer? Erm?

Yep.

A coil spring is just a wound up torsion bar (if you ever watch a compression spring in use, you'll see the ends rotate as it loads up, just like the torsion bars in the beam), if you make a torsion bar shorter, it gets stiffer.

's why you get a creaking noise from knackered top mount bearings even when you aren't moving the steering, the spring pushes the cup around as it twists.
Also why coilover lock-rings need a fair bit of torque to stop them coming undone (should have a thrust bearing under the spring really, makes them work better).

...and because I can see where this is going, no, don't chop your standard springs, they don't seat in the cup properly, Pug uses shaped ends. Razz

No no, i'm not chopping any springs, I have 60mm ones i'm trying to change for 40mm ones. Too low already. Was just wondering as the springs I have seem too soft for the amount they lower the car.

I'd have thought they'd need to be stiffer to cope with shortened stroke length (snigger) but they dont seem any firmer than standard. Just like the standard ride but a bit lower down LOL
