Coming down the motorway, my car developed quite a loud tapping that sounded like an old sewing lacking it kept wanting to cut out but it held together till I got to my destination,

I put it down to the oil probably been spent
However turned it over to do some checks and it literally p*ssed oil everywhere prettymuch poored out like a fountain!
From the front of the block somewhere,
I've checked the radiator for oil but nothing that I can see,..
Any one any ideas :/

Here's some pix

I've got it in bits it looks like the seal around the oil filter has given out! :-/

Will the engine be f*cked shortly then?

Dads work had a volkswagen that did that (common fault with that particular engine apparently)

They'd driven it 20 miles and it went again fine with fresh oil and a filter...

So with any luck yours may be ok...

If you're lucky it'll be just wear & tear damage, just make sure you've got a flushed it out properly before you drive it again.

Personally I'd get a new filter on, fill it with cheap oil, pump it through, drain it out then refill with decent oil, just to make sure you get out any crap that's in there.

Might be unnecessary, but better that than drive around with crap being scraped around the oilways.

the fact there was still so much oil in it to come out when you stopped should of helped keep it a bit safer... I'd of been very worried if there was none when driving.

I had a very similar thing happen on a mk1 golf. Changed the oil filter and the seal blew out immediately when I started it. Oil fooking eveywhere!

Well,....

It's spun a big end bearing and that's what the noise was
It had also blown the seal out from around the filter which didn't seem all that tight so weather that's contributed to it or not I don't know but well, joys of motoring

Mellow

Should have stopped right there!!

Did you not see the low oil pressure light?....

Engine rebuild time...

Edit; if its spun a bearing then you'll need a replacement rod, possibly a crank if youre unlucky.

take it the sump has been removed if you know its spun a bearing? if not it might just be knocking.

Oooh, nasty. Almost certainly it'd be the other way round - filter comes loose, oil pressure drops, bearing spins.

Nasty and unfortunate mate, I feel for you.

Sump not removed yet just the very loud bottom end knocking. Possibly spun a shell but will find out when engine is out. Just trying to make room for it on my drive. Got to jiggle round 2 transit vans, a 306 and a 207 LOL

Mine spun a bearing 140 mile after rebuilding all the top end.

Be wary of buying bottom ends tho. I picked one up off Birk which turned out to be from a over heated engine, the pistons had started to melt.

Its meant that Ive had to do a full bottom end rebuild with a fresh crank and rod!

I've seen exactly this before. A piece of the destroyed bearing was fired through the oil filter which punched the seal out.

well if it was going to go then,...
to be honest the noise started out like a bag or something stuck under the car then turned to an angry wasp/something vibrating which then suddely changed into an old sewing machine sound it never got any worse, but she did manage to limp to the intended destination, before giving up, Love

Picture from the other day LOL
