Help!

i am in the process of trying to change the CV boot on my car and I cannot remove the driveshaft on the drivers side.

I have got the hub nut off and that end is fine (So I guess I could change it on the car) but I was hoping to be able to remove the whole driveshaft (I have already drained the gearbox oil in preparation).

Is there something I am missing? I have done a search and cannot find anything. Would it be the Speedo sensor preventing it coming out? Welly's guide does not mention any furthernuts and bolts to undo, it just goes from the stage I am at now, to the whole drive shaft off.

Any quick advice would be appreciated greatly. Thanks

Matt

There are 2 wee bolts that hold the intermediate bearing in place, have you loosened these and turned them 180 degrees? Thumbs up

I hadn't, but I have had to give up this evening due to light. I am having some other issues getting the clips back on the CV boot and also getting the CV joint back on the spline over the metal ring.

Hopefully will be able to complete the job tomorrow.

Good luck on that Matt, as said above two little pins that need turning to release the drive shaft. Hope you don't split it.

The centre joint of the shaft as below, bottom shaft, can become unattached easily at the end of engine side. Shouldn't be a problem if you get the pins out.

I did initially try and undo the two bolts but they span a couple of times and I didn't know enough, so just did them back up. I am worried now they are done up in the wrong position. I will have a try tomorrow to get the whole shaft out intact.

So basically I just undo those two nuts a little until the bolt rotates, rotate them 180 Degs and then try and get the driveshaft out.

Is there a best way to do this? Also anyone got any good tips to get those bloody clips done back up? They are breaking me Cry

And 2 litres to replace it! Hopefully when I finish work tomorrow I will be able to get it all back together.

I will try a tie wrap over the ring to help get the CV joint back on.

Hopefully as well I will be able to remove the driveshaft without issues, which bit should I hit and how hard to get it to come out. I need to pick up some gearbox seals when I am out tomorrow.

Is there a standard way of removing the driveshaft or do I just need to whack the middle part where it meets the intermediate bearing (I think - the bit I mean it the one the other side of the two pins). Shall I pull the driveshaft from the gearbox side as well?

Oh great! LOL

Ah well, I must give it a go.

How about these clips on the CV boot, any nuggets of wisdom on how to get them back on? I have got a tool fram Halfords, but not being Geoff capes I can't pull it tight enough to get the bloody clip to go over. I have tried using another, longer, grip tool to squeeze it but it didn't happen. I may be able to fabricate some handle extensions for the hose pipe tool. I tried using a jubilee clip around the handles and wound it in that way, but the clip broke a little before getting to the point where it went over the lip to clip in. I thought I was almost there until then as well!

You mean those securing the rubber boot to the shaft? The replacements from pug are really tight. I put the tool on the ground and used my foot to persuade it...

I must ge tthe driveshaft off the car then. That would be my favoured method, just not on the car.

Fingers crossed I can remove the driveshaft tomorrow.

Another pair of hands doesn't go amiss for wiggling/ pulling purposes.

Try and get a wee drift or punch onto the intermediate bearing - punching towards the drivers wheel. Make sure the lug bolts are in the correct position as well or you will be p*ssing in the wind Thumbs up

I am still having a complete nightmare getting this driveshaft out. I could really do with getting it out as well, as the leak I have had from the gearbox is coming from the drivers side where the driveshaft goes in. I have a new seal, I just can't get the bloody thing to even budge.

I have loosened the pinch bolts and turned them so they are not fouling the exit for the driveshaft, but it will not budge.

I think I will be running out of light again this evening, but am at a loss as to how I am going to get this thing to move, even if I get the time. It is really bugging the crap into me now.

Yeah it can be a bugger if the intermediate bearing is pretty tight. If you are really strugling im pretty sure you can take the lower engine mount casing off the car as a whole unit including the driveshaft. Other than that a bigger hammer will be required to smack it out.

I take it you have had a gander at this CLICK ME

I hadn't and that is very helpful. I will keep trying to whack the intermediate bearing side and try and smack it out. I have added some WD40 to try and aid the movement. From the looks of the guide I just need to keep smacking it until it eventually comes out. I just need to find something decent to smack it with. Looks like I will be getting another loft to work tomorrow and another early finish to sort it out. Looking at the picture of the driveshaft seal, mine is a full 5mm away from the speedo housing, so that would be the reason mine is leaking oil!

I will stick with it, even if I have to get a lift in for the rest of the week. The only thing is the car is on axle stands outside the house in the road. The less time I can have it there the better, but it is a quiet cul de sac, so the only real traffic is people who live here.

I have my axle stands on the bulkhead, do you think I should move them to the jacking points? I also have the trolly jack at the jack point, just in case, I would have thought moving them to the jack points would give a little more overall support.

What I may do is refit the balljoint tonight and move the car away from the end of my drive, as the bin men are coming round tomorrow and I don't want them knocking it off.

Boom shacka lacka lacka lacka lacka lacka boom!

Managed to get the fooker out!

Many thanks Smithers (and Thug for some pep talking), that guide was what I was missing and gave me the confidence to tw@t the collar with a chisel. It started moving and eventually came out!

now just to replace the seal, clean the gearbox as it is bogging, sort out the CV boot and clips (should be a damn sight easier off the car! and then re-assemble. It is achievable now!

yea, where the oil has been leaking it is covered in oil and shite. While I have it up there I will give it a wipe down with z cloth, that's all. I can see of I have stopped the leak then, as well as making it look a bit more tidy.

Ha ha, I am not there yet matey!

I have another problem! I have got the small clip back on, ring in, CV joint back on shaft, grease in boot...... oh but hang on, I have just snapped my hose clip plyers trying to do the bigger one!!!

The problem I have now, is the bigger one does not seem to want to clip on properly and one of the curly bits looks more bent than the other. I have nail remover thingys which should be good, but this bloody clip does not want to locate. I will get a pic up now, as it will be more clear!

Ok here are some low quality iPhone pictures!

Clip - it does not seem to want to clip down any more. Notice the broken hose plyers in the background - They will be going back to Halfords tomorrow!

Another view

Another

The current state of play with the driveshaft! Just need to get this stage done and then it is ready to go back on the car. Grrrrrrr

I take it I could pick up another from Pug or somewhere tomorrow?? Any recommendations?
