Evening all.....

Wasn't really sure where to put this, but I suppose Interior is the most relevant.

Anyway, I've finally decided to stop running the risk of not having a spare wheel in the car, sacked off the steel spare and cage ages ago, and have managed to acquire a spare Turini in the correct size/offset.

Now, what I want to know is if anyone has any recommendations on what the best way to secure it in the boot is?

I've seen few people use 3 point ratchet strap type things and like the idea of them. Are they easy to install? Any ideas which ones are the best to go for?

Also, I found this after searching quickly last night.

Would that be a better solution or are the straps more than adequate?

Sorry for all the questions, just after some general advice really.

All helpful comments appreciated. Thumbs up

Is your car stripped or not? Mine is, so I have a spare wheel on each side, strapped with a basic loading strap through the spokes, around the bracket the rear seats clipped to and then through a bolt-in eyelet thing I put it.

No, it's not stripped at the moment. May do that sometime in the future.

I found this earlier, not as expensive as I thought they would be.

Think it might be worth a punt, doesn't look too hard to fit either. Smile

Yeah that'd do the job, very easy to drill some holes and bolt through the floor pan as well.

Can you fit a wheel upright against the side of the boot with rear seats in?

Naa, still too expensive and professional Smile

I got some bolts like this, then use a standard B&Q loading strap to hold them down.

I think I'm going to try and fit it flat to the boot floor, will make it a lot easier to fit the strap I think.

Will have a look to see which other types/brands are available.

Stu,

I will get you some pictures of what I use in the back of my rally car, it uses a post as there is nothing for it to sit against, but the strap I made (its very easy and massively cheaper that the ones shortcutted in the post) works a treat and with you having trim, you should be able to position the wheel and the strap to get the wheel secured in the boot.

The strap is made from a tie down strap that came from wilkinsons, it is just a matter of cutting a strip from the non buckle end (use a lighter to melt the fraid ends, and then double over the ends and drill a hole through the material, easiest done by clamping it between two m6 repair washers held in the vice as the material will tend to grab on the drill, another bit of careful lighter work to seal the hole but don't melt too fare to make the hole too big.

This need to be repeated on the ends that need to be clamped to the boot floor, using repair washers to spread the load and clamp against the material.

The buckle end of the strap needs to have a loop of the material made so that it will loop around the strap that is bolted to the floor at both ends, to make a T shape with the bolted parts as the top of the T, and the buckle as the upright. Mine is then covered with a piece of heatshrink to keep things tidy (maplins for heatshrink). The loop has a repair washer on each side of the loop's material, and then connected with an m6 bolt and a nyloc nut, cut down so no threads are left once it was all tightened up.

The end that passes through the buckle, that you then pull to tighten it all down, is best cut at 45% to make it easier to feed through the buckle.

The fixed loop (bolted on both ends to the boot floor) needs to be long enough when fitted to pull up to a point where the heatshrinked loop is between the rim and the bolt holes. The bolts ideally should be close to the tire edge and the single bolted strap set so that it pulls the buckle across the centre of the wheel rim.

Hope that all makes sense, with the pics. Shout if there is anything that doesn't make sense. There will be plenty of length on the straps from wilkinsons, and it will make sense to have a bit of a practice with doing the holes on some of the excess length...

Martin
