im seem to have a leak but it not from the driveshafts because i replaced both seal about a month ago. it seems to be coming from where the gearbox meets the engine "sump area" any ideas??? will take a pic in the morning i think

either leaking out the sump on that corner, or its the crank oil seal, hopefully its just the sump leaking otherwise to do the crank seal its a gearbox, clutch, flywheel off job Sad

on the plus side if its a crank seal, be rude not to fit a billet flywheel....

only fitted this month ago bah. im guessing the crank seal sits behind the flywheel??? i noticed a little leak when we took it of and was told this is normal. Huh?
will it cause any damage if it is left? the car always get regular service and oil checks so will never be super low on oil

yeah the seal goes around the outside of the crank where the flywheel bolts on.

na shouldnt leak atall mate, although there would be a number of cars outthere with a weaping seal.

so replaced this seal a month ago? i would expect you damaged it when fitting, you probably wouldnt notice it by eye though.
it won't cause any damage, just anoying everytime the car is moved theres a patch of oil.

This isn't the crank oil seal. It's the oil seals on the piece of metal under the big end bearing. Not only is it gearbox off its sump off to. When I did my clutch I did the crank oil seal to try and fix this without success and without understanding the true cause. Mine is still weeping away but just put up with it.

If you look at rich_w high boost engine build thread or Andy+Katie project thread you can see pictures and text about these oil seals, they always go on these engines. They cost pence to buy from Pug but are a ball ache to sort out.

you mean the long seals on the crank seal housing yes? i'd change them at the same time as the crank seal too.

Yeah those are the ones, I haven't seen many xu10j4rs where they ain't leaking.

In the rich_w high boost engine build thread he replaces the long seals and even puts a fillet of autojoint on the inside of the crank seal housing which makes sense to me. Maybe one day I will sort it.

Sad

Only reason I said it was 'normal' mate cos all the 6 engines I have worked on, including Will's leaked slightly out of one of the flywheel bolt holes.

Mine's done it (on 3 different engines), Ryan's, Will's, yours.

Happy to help fix it mate.

Just to add that it could also be your input shaft seal on the gearbox. I cant remeber the last time I saw a nice dry bell housing on anything with a BE or MA box and this seal is usually the problem.

In answer to your question on will it do any harm, if it is your input shaft seal it will end up contaminating/f*cking your clutch, Tbh I would imagine it can do the same if it is the crank seal too.
