Few questions.
1: Anyone changed these on theirs?
2: How much of a twat of a job is it?
3: I understand they screw into the rack is this right?
4: can it be done with the rack in place?
5: does the subframe need dropping?

Cheers in advance

1, kinda, done one on a rack off the car, and it was very easy, the r/h is the same as any 205 309 etc, the left hand is more of a faff due to pas.

2, very much

3, yup

4, yup, with special tools

5, no, as above.

Done mine yesterday!

Dropping the subframe is quite simple really but I have loosened to lower not completely removed!

Regarding replacing the arms a special tool is required its like a metal plate with a half circle cut out and a drive square cut in for rachet!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJpuz-gf9pA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

I'm sending mine off to get fully reconditioned now it's out! £79.99

I've just bought a xsara rack, would it be a good idea to change these arms before it gets fitted? How much are they? It's only done about 50-60k apparently but if it's easier with the rack off it may aswell be done.

Yes they screw into the rack. I did both last year on my HDI. I didn't loosen the subframe or the rack, and I did the whole lot with mole grips through the access hatches in the subframe.

An easier than expected task to be honest. My HDi had done 232K at the time. Replaced one, only for the idiot tracking the car to bend the other one and not tell me.

bit trickier on the 6 due to the limited steering lock one way.

Yes but I found that the access hatches were more than sufficient. I researched the job on here first and found numerous photos illustrating the ability to do it in-situ with little extra preparatory work. Smile

Just takes some time to tighten it because of the funny washer.

f**k knows how ya would do it on a 6?

Specially with the tools and force needed to do it!

For £80 getting the whole rack stripped and rebuilt new parts where required and leak tested I'm going down the less stress road!

Umm there is that I guess. They however don't stock the GTi rack so they won't have the parts required other then the original parts other then standard bits general to rebuild with ie seals etc.

I feel comfortable it will be of good quality as seen a few they have done and seem a good company to go for!

Acs power steering.

Ok this is what we are dealing with, earlier today I got under the car to check this out. The only way i could think of to remove this is to use mole grips or water pump pliers to grasp the external portion of the track rod inner ball joint. When I turned this it seemed to also rotate the shaft inside the steering rack itself before meeting some resistance at which point i decided to halt proceedings before i damaged something maybe.

Whats everyones take on this? I would imagine the only way to get this off is to do exactly that but wouldnt this damage something inside the rack if i applied some serious pressure?

Anyways heres a pic of the new track rod.....

Ive been looking online and have found tools to take track rods of which slide over the track rod itself and couple to another part that fits round a square section on the inner ball joint - but ive not seen anything like this ^^^

So is it just a case of water pump pliers and properly going for it???

dunno if that will fit though, there are larger ones.

though I'd just go at it same as you have done already, or leave it to a garage.

Yes ive been looking at similar, i would think the tool would be like a half section thing that would 'cup' the inner balljoint where those protrusions are then have another tool like the one above to slide over and 'mate' with the other and have 3/8'' drive at the other end for a breaker bar or something.

All I did was eye it up today really - I cracked on with fitting a nissens rad instead in the end today but i might have another pop at this tomorrow. Just hope applying turning force doesnt break something inside the rack Dunno but it seems thats the only way.

Right gonna attack this at the weekend so what's the verdict? Get some big mole grips and have a punt? This pressure won't break anything inside the fax?
