As some people know i have a bent valve in the head somewhere and im looking to sort this out soon.

The job seems simple enough except one thing, the feckin exhaust mani bolts. Doh

Do people have a good method for this? and what tools should i expect to need. Thought maybe with the right tool ie spanner ratchet or something like this that it might make the job easier. Unsure

Was also wondering if i take the cams out and the carriers off then would this give me more freedom to get at them??

Dont want to start the job until i know that im going to complete it. Yes

13mm ratchet spanner makes it a load easier Yes

Best off removing cams before removing anyway, as it will stop any risk of bending more valves when you lift it off.

ok cool, can i do all the work from above or is it totally necessary to jack the car up and go from below?

This is the procedure i got so far in my head

1. lock the bottom pulley and cams in place
2. remove cambelt
3. remove cam carriers
4. take out the camshafts
4. inlet and exhaust mani off etc
5. head off doing bolts in sequence

thing im most unsure about is removing the cams is there anything i need to watch out for on this?

I'd leave the cams in myself, they dont give any more space to get at the exhaust manifold with the carriers removed, and when removed do leave a very sharp edge to catch knuckles/wrists on!

On any head removal I first rotate the crank & line up the crank hole, remove spark plugs & check that all pistons are halfway down the bores-ie: two pistons rising, two falling. That way if the cams aren't pinned (as can sometimes be if verniers are fitted), there is no risk of the cam rotating on the lobe & hitting a piston when you remove the cambelt.

Also I reckon its safer to remove the cams as there is less risk of bending a valve if you accidentally knock it against something when lifting it out.

Take the cams out before you remove the head.

Given the fact you're removing the head because it's probably got an acutely bent valve, you would be foolish to create more work for yourself by bending a couple more when removing the head... it's very easy to catch them on the block.

Also, IMO, having the exhaust cam cap out the way makes the studs / nuts much easier to access.

Smile

That's a recipie for disaster, if John takes his time he will get bored of it or the car will get bored & make a run for the bush on the other side of the roadLaugh my ass off

Cool

Edit, John it won't be just one valve that's bent, it will be at least twoDoh

Be carefull not to make a full turn with the cams as the inlet and exhaust valves will hit each other and get bent.

not sure about that really, bit of a freak problem that the more i think about it was probably due to oil starvation or something like that or a bent valve that was missed. Sad

Got a new head off dan which means i can take my time building one up and get it all ready to do the job in one day.

Only problem is now i got this head it came already dis assembled Doh

not too bad as the valves had been stored all in order except the method of storage meant that 4 of the exhaust valves and all the exhaust lifters got mixed up Cry

Dan swares its all sound and i believe him and the head itself looks tiptop and all the valves look straight.

But this still presents me a problem i need to make decisions about, i didnt want to buy new valves but as some have got mixed up this maybe a good idea.

But does this mean having the seats recut?

i could go full force and get all new valves and have 3 angle valve seats cut but this will cost a few quid no doubt.

can i not just get the valves checked and re-lapped Unsure

cheers for the help

John, it will be at least two bent as Wayne says....

The reason for this is that all the valves run in pairs, so if one of them has been bent then the other will be too. Yes
