hi guys,

the mrs is having trouble with our 6!!!!!

she said it keeps stalling and was juddering and making some dodgy noises, like a loud metal ticking noise. she took it to her dad, who said it sounds like a dropped valve?????

but ive just got in and it sounds normal? i haven't driven it as its on our drive and i dont want to be stranded in it!

any ideas if this sounds likely? the garages round here are terrible and carls a 2 hour trek away to drive to with a possibly dying car!

am i worth just selling as is? as ive had enough of the car now anyway and looking to go to a d turbo due to running costs!

or any ideas of costs involved?

Does anyone know how much we'd be looking at to get someone to check it all over? Sad

Take the plugs out. If it has dropped a valve the spark plug will likely be smashed tooSmile

I cant see that you will have dropped a valve if this is the case, the car wouldnt be running well at all.

Try checking the coil packs.

Trust me, if it had dropped valve you would know about it, however you need to get it checked out, sounds like possibly a slipped belt......Unsure

thanks jeffers, would that then run ok if that had happened? i.e. be intermittent?

im going to check the sparks shortly (will have to go buy some tools)

then just check nothings unplugged etc.... failing that, off to a garage i guess Sad

A loud metal ticking noise is certainly not good, if it's doing doing that. Maybe try and upload a vid of the noise?

I believe if the belt has slipped, then the outcome is similar to cambelt snappage, I'm sure I remember Carl saying that in my other thread Sad

Really hope it isn't for your sake.

what worrys me is part of one is broken, presumably in the engine.....

is my engine now deaded?

2 were unscrewable loose over 2 are tight,

would this be why fuel economy has been terrible?

Those plugs look well old Shock

Do you know when the timing belt etc was last changed? Loose plugs could certainly be a symptom yes, worth a tenner to try and see if it fixes it.

A broken plug could certainly indicate metal floating around in the top of the engine.

Have a look down into the plug holes and see if it looks smooth or any markings on top of the pistons etc, or any loose metal in there.

Is it ok to drive with a broken bit of plug in it?

We bought from Carl a year ago so I'm sure belt was done then

Put new plugs in and go from there. That broken plug could be causing a misfire.

The part missing could (worst case scenario) be stuck on a valve seat giving the impression of a head gasket failure i.e no compression in that cylinder!

Just get standard Bosch or NGK's from a motor factor.

Get it compression tested. Its more than likely to have been blown out and be in the CAT. A compression test will confirm.

Just seen this, very strange how the tip has fell off, before you replace the plugs spin the engine over on the starter motor and if the tip is still in the bore it may blow it out.

Have seen this a few times and never had any issues once a new set of plugs have been fitted.

Let me know how you get on, fingers crossed for you.

Carl

Simon if you want some help let me know. As for plugs, 4x NGK's are about £7.50 all in at All Parts Automotive in Hemel, right next to Halfords. That's where I got mine from.

The stalling may be down to the knackered plug, and the metal tapping noise would of been the loose spark plugs.

If you fancy breaking it let me know as I still need that drivers side wing Whistle

Thanks everyone!

Got 4 new plugs yesterday and whacked them in, started her up and she sounds the best she has for a while! Haven't had a chance to test drive yet, but will do today!

Anything to test on the drive? Or just give it a bit of beans?

Thanks for your help matevSmile

Do you think we should see a bit better fuel economy now? Or some better performance?

The engine sounds way less tappy than it did

Fuel economy should certainly improve, it should feel/sound smoother too.
