I drove up to Skegness today... About a 3 hour drive from where I live! Had nothing but problems the whole way there...

I would be driving along either just cruising along or accellerating, there was no particular pattern... And it would be stuttering and trying to die on me...
I would have my foot on the throttle but suddenly no power at all and then all of a sudden the power would shoot back!

Then at one point it died completely and I had to stop, I noticed that when I was turning the key to the ignition, that the fuel pump was not turning on and whining like usual... So I disconnected the electical connection and blew in it to clean it out, put it back, turned to ignition again and it turned on and then fired up straight away...

Sorry for the essay, but does this mean I nee to replace me fuel pump or is there an electical fault somewhere..?

Cheers,
Tom.

they don't prime every time you turn the ignition on.

sounds similar to a lambda fault.

So you recon it's more probable that it's the lamda... The only thing that made me think the pump was on it's way out, is sometimes the pump is priming the tone varies and sounds like it's struggling as apposed to a continuios tone like it should..?

Tom.

What you have described is exactly what happened to me before the pump gave up.

started happening more and more often until it done it again but this time slowly the car ground to a halt and it didn't want to move anymore LOL

Well I've tracked down a fuel pump... Gunna try that first as it's pretty easy to fit apparently! Then I'll have to try the lambda after that...

Where is the lamda sensor exactly..? As I've heard it sometimes helps to just clean it...

It's a f*cker to get to though isn't it... Can you get to it without taking anything off?

Awesome! I rang up euro today and they said they had one in stock... But I'm worried it isn't the correct item, are the variations of the sensor between phases..? And if so how do I tell the difference..?

Cheers,
tom.

Lambdas no, they're all the same across the petrol 306's bar the twin lambda 1.8 engines.

right!

i have fitted a new fuel pump and relay... and also a new lambda sensor!
oh and i have taken the icv off and cleaned it, well i say i have, i actually got the mechanic who rebuilt my engine to do it...

all not making a slight bit of difference!

i really havent got a clue what the problem could be now..?

it will litterally sit on idle for say 30 seconds ish, then pretty much with no warning (other than a ever so slight dip in the revs) it will cut out...
sometimes i will just turn the key again, the fuel pump primes and it start straight up again, but then obviously will repeat the same sitution over again...

other times, when it cuts out... it especialy likes to do this if i stop at a set of lights for a long period of time (but also does it when i leave it to idle), the fuel pump will not prime when i try to turn to igniton again!
then when i try to turn it over it trys to start but doesnt as it doesnt get any fuel from the pump...

i thought it might be something to do with the imobilizer maybe, or along the electrical side of things... as i do get an engine management light come up from time to time when this happens, and also the hazard lights flash once at the same time...

any help would be great!!!
i feel like scrapping the bloody thing... Thumbs down

cheers,
tom.

was the trouble you had happening when you was driving along aswell though?

as the most worrying problem is the fact i will be driving along the motorway in 6th at about 3500 revs and i will loose powere completely and stutter on and off...

then i have sometimes had to stop completely and it wouldnt start again, untill i leave it to settle for a minute disconnect the batter and reconnect again... then it starts?

ANYONE WANT TO BUY A GTI-6..?
