I seem to have a squeeling noise coming from the engine on idle. Think it might be coming from the cambelt area but not 100% sure...when I accelerate the noise seems to dissapear under the noise of the engine, so the squeel does not get louder under acceleration.

I did notice that it is worse when the engine has just been started, and after i've given it a blast down the dual carriage way, the squeel isn't as noticable as it was before.

The cambelt is due to be changed on about 100,000, and i'm currently on about 94,000. Any ideas? Time for an early belt change? Sad

May be best just to get it looked at either way, the last thing you want is the belt to come off.

could be anything, alternator, PS, aux belt, aux belt pulley aux belt tensioner.

water pump, timing belt idler, timing belt tensioner....

endless, and any of them potentially catastrophic if they fail.

what was the problem in the end Gaz? I have one too that only appears around 2k revs, gets higher pitched with increased revs.

Pop the aux belt off and see if the noise goes away.

If it does, then I suspect it's probably one of the idlers or the tensioner. Yes
Have you checked the charger fluid level? Unsure

I will have a look this weekend.

The charger oil, filter and renewed only last august. Has not even covered 3000 miles yet.

Thanks Stan

just assuming the aux belt stops working, can it damage the charger not having the pulley belt rotating?

allesclar your six is supercharged then?

have you considered the pulley bearings? mine squealed quite badly, iv replaced them once or twice in last 4 years

once i snapped my Aux belt aka power steering /alternator/ supercharged belt when my auto tensioner bearing fell apart. I cleared the debris and belt remains and limped home without power steering, my battery charging or any supercharger boost Smile never done me any harm

Shouldnlt damage the charger. When my tensioner pulley went, I cut the belt off so that I could run the engine as it was f**king cold while waiting for the AA to tow it.

The worry is if the belt flaps about and takes something with it, e.g. the cambelt.

i seen the remains of a 1.9d when rogue aux belt really done a number on cambelt cover
edit: think it was a 1.9d

Yes, aux belts have been known to fail and cut through the cambelt cover and take the cambelt with them on XU10 lumps. Yes

Just temp remove it and then rev the engine up and see if the noise disappears. Yes

If it does, then switch off and rotate each pulley on the aux belt circuit and see if any feel "rough". Smile

right.

Well i have changed the belt, still the same problem.

Tried it with the belt off and there is no squeel so i know its no aux belt related.

I have the alloy crank shaft pulley and the other 3 ones too that are none standard from Rich.

I have turned them and they dont feel rough at all.

I am starting to worry that it might be the charger?
