Not much done today, my Sister came over and I had to take her Astra for its first MOT and service/clean it for her afterwards. Then came a rather decent lunch at the local pub, then lawn cutting duties.

Anyway, I got the drivers leg bolted up..

Then built the brakes back up (except the caliper - still being painted)

Nearly done drivers side now, get the pads in and caliper on next, then droplink, then fit the new track rod ends, before getting the passanger side finished.

Be interested to see how long the plating lasts, not trying to put down your workBig grin but some rear shock mount bolts/nuts I had re-plated were rusty as hell again after a couple of months in AutumnSad

Know what you mean Kev, i'm using the plating kit, mainly for the "undercover" bits, ie stuff in the dry engine bay area, as plated bits do corrode just like any other metals given the right conditions.

The bolts and stuff on the suspension have all been done in etch primer then silver paint, at least that way they stand a chance of lasting more than a few months, afterall, i want to use the bugger when its done, not be afraid to get it wet etc etc.

Don't think plating companys clean up/de-rust bolts properly from what I've seenSmile

Very valid point chap. As an experiment i plated the coil pack cover bolts this afternoon, just acid dipped them first (there were still odd bits of shit on them) and they have come out w@nk. They are heading for a fresh solution of deox c when it arrives, then i'll do them again.

Im looking forward to the damned thing being in one piece again, getting sick of seeing it on stands! LOL

Apologies for lack of updates, ive been doing bits and bobs in the garage as and when i can. Last nights half hour on the car saw the drivers brakes being re-assembled and fitted for good, all thats left is the ARB drop link and track rod end on the drivers side then that corners done.

I couldnt resist a sneaky pic of the new wheel on the front, even though it was almost dark and the pictures are shit, you get an idea of what it should look like when it eventually gets off the stands..

Tuesday night will see the passanger suspension back on, and the hub painted, ready for re-assembly, then it can go back on its wheels.

Engine bay bits are in progress, the new inlet manifolds been painted up, lots of new bits have been sourced - pictures will follow.

Tuesday Update.

Suspension is all finished, brakes are back on, new Track rod ends/droplinks are fitted, everythings torqued up.

With that all done we decided to make a start on the Engine bay.

Some befores..

We removed the fuel rail and injectors, the full inlet was next, then the cam covers - leaving the coil packs in place.

I have a new inlet already painted (pics will follow) so i made a start on the cam covers.

As they were..

Solvent cleaned, scotchbrite pad scuffed up then etch primed..

Then it was "Crackle paint finish" time.

Im chuffed to bits with the crackle finish. I think it'll look ace in the engine bay with the other bits that will be painted, and the fittings zinc plated.

More updates soon.

Update time.

The cam covers have been hardening off for the last few days, so ive finished the detailing on the "16v" lettering and this is what it looks like fitted back together.

Attention was then turned to the inlet manifold.

As it was removed from the car.

It was cleaned using gunk, g101 and the pressure washer, left to dry, then keyed all over with a scotchbrite pad, given a solvent wash with panel wipe, etch primed, painted and lacqured.

Resulting in this.

New genuine Peugeot badge for the manifold.

I then prepared and painted the throttle body, giving it a damn good clean out in the process.

Before..

New throttle body gasket - Notice how the kind helpful Peugeot main stealers, only sell these in packs of 10..... violent1

I painted the body up, masking off the delicate bits.

I zinc plated all the bolts on the throttle body as thus.

Then painted the fuel rail in satin black.

I then refitted the throttle body with new gasket, and did a trial fit on the rail, just to see how it would look.

You will see the inlet manifold bolts have all been plated and have come out quite well.

The observant will see the injectors are missing, well.... dunno???

Here they are...

They have been Flow tested, then professionally ultrasonically cleaned - both internally and externally, fitted with new internal filter baskets and then re-flow tested, all being now absolutley spot on. Many thanks to Mark (aka tintin) for this. ThumbsUp

Final job tonight was to remove the manky breather hoses (the fabric covered ones)

What ive done with these is strip them apart, and ive got the hoses soaking in a bowl of Autosmart Midnight (its a strong trade spec. black carpet dye). Hopefully after a day or so, they should be nice jet black colour. Im replacing the crappy rusted jubilee clips with new stainless ones of course.

I've also removed and painted the engine mount brackets, and zinc plated the fixings, and painted the cylinder head and other bracketry. I'll get pics of these over the weekend.

All being well, next Tuesday will see the big refit and hopefully it'll be all nearly done.

correction, pug dealers are supplied the gaskets in multiples of 10 from the Peugeot/Citroen warehouse, they are to be sold singly, though due to the fairly low turnover of parts like this its not surprising they try and pull a fast one and make people buy all of them in one go, or worst case refuse to order parts often citing that they arent available...

luckily I know a few good parts people Smile

Welshpug - my dealers a complete tool tbh, but i do get trade discount so all aint lost.

Bennn - i used the Original bumpstops but trimmed them down a touch as they were unmarked.

The dustcovers were simply washed and cleaned and refitted. Pity none of its everseen....

like this. nice to see someone else breathing life into a classic. imo id leave the underside as it is. its only going to get caked in crap anyway and if it needs another coat in future its an easier job that doing it body colour again. bit jeleaous actually. i painted the underside of mine as well. rust treated first then used dark blue hammerite as i thought it would be fairly close to the 'china blue' outside. unfortunately dont have a pic but lets just say its more turquiose than dark blue!LOL

as for the rear brake backing plates the new ones look sweet but i just sand blasted mine down and sprayed them silver. very easy job to do if you know someone with a blaster and they look so much better.

does make me want to take my rear beam off now and paint it as i didnt have time after it was re built.

keep up the good work

Update time.

Nice day today, so following some time with the family this morning, i managed to get a few hours on the Pug this afternoon.

I'd painted the cylinder head, brackets, engine mount and zinc plated the fitting bolts the other day..

I'd sourced a new Battery Cover from Peugeot..

Then found 10 mins to fit the new steering wheel - because i'm a tart, i like the feel of suede.. LOL

.

One of the awkward jobs under the bonnet was to replace a weeping oil cooler seal, again, sourced from pug, did the job, along with a new genuine OE blue pureflux filter.

Once i'd done that it was time to change the horrible rotten underbonnet soundproofing pad. From past experience, buying second hand ones of these is a false economy because they lose all rigidity and look cack, so i bit the bullet and got a new Pug one.

Heres the er..cough..inconspicuous large box ive been hiding in the garage... along with the crappy one id just removed..

The under bonnet without it. I then cleaned all the paintwork with G101 and then wiped with a MF work cloth.

Old and new - side by side..

And then fitted..

Bonnet Badge Time!!

I'd got to do something with the slightly stone chipped original bonnet badge, so i decided to split it apart (very carefully) to paint the outer bit Satin Black.

I have painted it, and bonded it back together, but the adhesive's drying in the garage so i cant get a pic..

However, incase I don't like it (and its a 20 second job to change) i have got a new one in reserve..

FINALLY, it was time to get the car off the axle stands and show it terra firma, along with the new wheels and tyres. Its also the first opportunity ive had to see how the stance of the car is, with all the new suspension kit fitted.

I measured the drop and its gone down 25mm at the rear and 20mm at the front (despite it having 30mm Eibach lowering springs). I'd imagine the slightly bigger wheels ofset some of the lowering?

Anyway, pics with the wheels on. Excuse the state of the paintwork, its in desperate need of a full correction, which will be done in due course.

And finally my new favorite picture of the Gti. My new screensaver.

Comments welcome as always.

Matt
