Hi all, apologies for the wrong section and bluntness!

I have just driven my 6 home without a problem, let it 5 mins outside the house then went back out to it. Got in turn the key and it sounds like the starter motor is skiming the flywheel rather than turning it. The engine is not turning over although the starter motor is spinning with a grinding type noise! The last few times I have started it it's sounded like the starter is engaging or a little too long, a couple of seconds at most.

Any ideas? Easy tests etc?

Cheers

I have put it in gear and moved it forward a bit, the car started. Switched it off and tried the same process but to no avail.

Fecked flywheel?

They didnt have the harderned toothed ring pressed on so you will have lost teeth i reckon. Danny (3rd time lucky) had this happen to his early lightened flywheel.Smile

If I put a d-turbo starter motor in will this temporarily solve the problem? As that engages the whole ring gear rather than just a section of it?

Wouldnt think the remaining bits of tooth on the flywheel will last long though.

I have just found out that I am already running a d-tub starter as per Marks installation.

I have been out earlier and looked through the hole in the bell housing. I can see this on my fly wheel, although not as bad:

Think this might be my problem!

Hi bud,

This happened to mine some time ago. I too had an old style lightened flywheel.

I took the gti starter off and used a starter from a TD. This has a wider spindle and so caught what was left of the teeth. Was fine for a couple of months, but then they finally let go.

Contact rich_w, just explain whats happened, he was a great help to me in helping to sort mine.
