Anyone else run them?

Thinking about getting a set for the wife's Fabia VRS for her standard 16" alloys, 205/45/16

Can't seem to find many. Camskills are sold out until October 2010LOL The only other place is MyTyres who sell Kumho KW23 for

Depends what you want, but Fedima F4R snow/gravel/rally tyres are only about 60 quid each in that size...

try mytyres, a friend of mine said they're a German company so may do some.

I know someone on the 205 forum that rates the Michelin Alpin tyres he has on his 306.

Phil, think they might be a bit aggressive for what i am wanting as planning on running them for the full winter, 3 months or so.

Welshpug, i have tried MyTyres as above.

Hi Mike,

I highly recommend toyo snowprox, running them on all my cars this year. No problems so far, good on all conditions & durable enough for the whole winter

Did a lot of research into this as I was going to get some until the rallye HG blew. Vredestien seem to be the way to go.

using some common sense ive decided to revive this thread rather than start another one on the same subject Big grin

as the winters have got considerably worse over the last few years, is anyone else now used/using winter tyres? i think they will be a necessity to keep my '6 going round the country roads near me so have my Dunlop winter sports ready.

just wondering what everyones opinion of winter tyres is now?

I've got them on a spare set of wheels I got for my Astra, Just put them on when it gets below 7 degrees on average.

Clearly if you're on a sheet of ice in seven feet of snow they're not going to make much difference, but they are noticeably more grippy in the cold and we've all seen enough people slide about in the snow to see how much damage even a small slip can do.

£400 I think mine cost (16" ) and they'll last three or four winters minimum. That's less than the excess would be on a single bump, so worth every penny in my opinion Yes

I had 2 older ones, but too worn to use anymore.

So got myself 2 uniroyal wintertyres (forgot the type) to accompany the 2 bridgestone blizzac's I bought last year. (why different brands? prices at the time) in 195/55/15

Also got wintertyres for the other car (mazda6), namely goodyear ultragrips (205/55/16)

Can't fault any of them (still have to see how the uniroyals will be)
And they make a BIG difference in snowy/freezing conditions.

If you don't want to buy wintertyres, consider all season tyres (with the vredestein quatrac being the best avaib ) or even the uniroyal rainsport, superb in wet will probably provide more grip than most summertyres due to being a rather soft compound.

Was thinking about going to the scrappy and finding some of the skinniest steelies I could, realised they won't fit over gti brakes.

Not when they've all crashed into each other and you can just sit in the car keeping warm.

it seems they are becoming more common in this country now with the harder winters we've been having. i cant wait to see what difference they make... thats assuming they do make a difference, if not then expect alot of crying and maybe some crash pics for your entertainment

They really do make a difference, it's just basic physics. Rubber has a very narrow band of temperature in which it remains soft, and below about 5 degrees normal rubber is just like plastic with no give or friction whatsoever.

Winter tyres are made of a different rubber which is still pliable in cold temperatures but would be so soft at 30 degrees that they wouldn't last one summer. Because of the narrow temperature band tyres are *always* a compromise - having two different sets that are both suitable for purpose is the way to go Yes

so whats the ideal time to change over to the winter set? my guess would be when the temperature averages around 7 degrees all day? don't want to put them on too soon and ruin them though.

and thanks for the feedback everyone Thumbs up

oh and ive started reading 'track cars for dummies' again and i have to bow down to you Owain, i have a good basic mechanical knowledge but wouldn't have the balls to tackle half the jobs you have. seems i have a long way to go before i get to the level of many of the guys on here Yes

Yup, seven degrees average which tends to be November time. Mine should be going on soon, but instead it seems I'm still hanging washing outside and needing the sprinkler to keep the grass green. Ridiculous.

Yeah it is surprisingly nice for this time of year. I'm hoping it will stay nice for a few more weeks so I can enjoy my new setup when I get my '6 back from Miles before the winter set goes on
