My mate has a GTI powered 205, with a xsara gear box. He has had 3 sets of 1.9 new drive shafts, and they keep breaking. We have spoken to a well known 'peugeot performance specialist' who said we have to cut a few 'mm' out, to stop the breaking. Just wondered if anyone else has a 205 and if they have overcome a similar problem.

I have a xsara box in my gti6 205 and with xsara shafts its fine.

Can send you a couple if you need?

Carl, I assume you need to run the Xsara/306 hubs if yu run the vts shafts? Is there anything else you would need to change?

Ah yes thats a good point, i run the 306/xsara hubs, other than that ie shockers and top mounts etc is all 205, i tried the 306 setup and it was a bit 4x4 like.

Have hubs aswell should you need them with either the 16mm ball joints or the later 18mm ones.

Been a while since i did the conversion now, call me if you like can have a chat about it.

Nobody told you to weld anything?

Also i have found out that you are not using pug shafts wich would explain your problem

you can also put the inner knuckle from a 6 shaft (n/s) on the end of you 205 shaft

saves you chopping anything

Ok thanks for the relpys. Carl, are we saying that to use xsara shafts we need to change the 205 hubs to the xsara ones? If so please could you quote for these parts?

you need the xsara or gti6 inner cv cup and then a 205 shaft

Do you mean your running the inner joints or have you shortened the shafts? Standard xsara shafts are far to long aren't they?!

16mm Xsara/306 hubs are virtually identical to 205 hubs so I don't see how this would help apart from possibly losing you some camber.

ant - buy a genuine shaft and chop 8mm off or put a 6 end on the n/s shaft

If my memory serves me correctly we used to put 306 TD ends on a 205 shaft so they didn't bottom out in the diff, it was 15 years ago so i might be wrong!

Also 205 1.9 gti hubs are basically the same as the 16mm (balljoint) 306 ones, just without the ABS holes...

Having issues with my 205 gti6 and it's drive shafts, I fitted a 16v XSI 5 speed to my gti6 lump and I have been using 1.9 205 Gti shafts, I have knackerd the outer passengers as the gaiter spilt on a 200 mile trip. I have a worn outer joint now Sad, right the only shafts I have are some 1.6 Gti ones or gti6 ones along with the 1.9 that are fitted. Any smart whizz know if I can make a decent set outer what I have, I know the standard gti6 shafts are to long but the sound of it I could swap some bits from each ?
Oh btw I run 309 Gti arms

You can do what jonnie said, but if the safts eventally go or boots split, then it is a pain to start swapping the cups onto the replacement shaft.

I would use a 205 diff with the 306 box. That way you can still run the standard 309 shafts without the need to swap the cups over.

Edit: sorry, just realised you run 309 arms, so you would ideally need 309 shafts to eliminate the risk of them pulling out of the box on full lock.
