When I turned the ignition on in my old XS 1.8 I had the same oil level guage on my dash. It would 'ping' around to max quite quickly before dropping again.

Since having my GTi6 it has never done this, only ever reaching about ¾s of the way around and usually rising very very slowly.

This morning it did the low-level thing where it fails to meet the halfway point and continues to flash. Checking the dipstick showed there was plenty of oil there, but this was after the engine had warmed up so I'm keen to check it again later.

Question is; should it ping around to max as it did in my old car?

If youre parked on level ground and the oil has returned to the sump (ie, you haven't just switched the engine off) then yes, the oil level indicator should read max.

Assuming youre not low on oil of course!

This is what bothers me.

Sounding more and more like it's done all of its' oil. It's still running-in right now and in need of a change, might be worth a compression test if it's low on oil then? Sad

Thought you said the dipstick level was ok?

It was, after the car had warmed up.

The car first started this morning, the guage went just over halfway, drove the car for 5 minutes then came out and it was when I started it again that the warning came up.

It does smoke an awful lot in the mornings, I'm wondering if it's valve stem seals?

What color is the smoke in the morning? If its white then id say thats normal this time of year, but if its blue, thats not good.

Well it's white, but there's a lot of it? Is that just the nature of the '6 having quite a substantial exhaust system? It doesn't smoke under throttle but tends to be more when sat at a junction and as pulling away. Probably condensation?

Either way I just checked it, the level is fine on the dipstick and the guage went to ¾s again when I turned her on. Just a dodgey little thing I'll have to keep an eye on I guess! About as trustworthy as the fuel guage!

Go by the dipstick and check it when the oil is in the sump.

Sensor might need a repair or replacement as the wiring tends to get damaged.
