Hi all please help!

I've had a judder from the clutch for a while now. Mr Clutch fitted a new clutch last year, so I took it back to them under guarantee.

They replaced the clutch FOC just over 2 weeks ago and it was fantastic, much nicer to drive etc. Now since then the judder has returned and is now just as bad as before it was replaced.

It's had a new clutch, clutch cable and lower/upper engine mounts.

What the hell could it be? Flywheel maybe?

Sorry but I don't think it'll be the clutch. It's had an LUK one fitted which are good clutches, and anyway even a cheap clutch will last more that 2 weeks gentle driving don't you think?!

Nah LUK are normally good.
Do you deffo know that it was a LUK one fitted? Could be an oil leak on to the clutch plate from somewhere like the rocker gaskets. Also check that the box hasn't come loose from the engine.

A cynic might say you've had two clutches from them and they have both gone wrong.

Definately an LUK clutch, I was there when it was delivered and unpacked.

If there had been an oil leak it wouldn't have been covered under warrenty so should be ok, I'll check the 'box is tight tomorrow but I think it will be.

Can't think what else could cause it though!

Broken springs in the clutch plate, sticking fork or cable.

Luk clutches are normally ok,

you may have high spots on the flywheel or a rear main oil seal leak and after a while these are the causes to your issue, you need to have the face skimmed on the flywheel itself to remove the high spots and check the seal whilst the flywheel is removed, then refit the clutch etc

That was the lines I was thinking. Any ideas on cost and places to get the flywheel skimmed? Would I need to put another new clutch in or should this one be ok?

You would be looking at the cost to remove and refit the box, most engineering firms can skim a flywheel for you. I would say on average

The new clutch will start to pick up on the hotspots on the flywheel or if its oil related will start to get covered in it.

did they do the cheeky thing and just replace the plate ? or did they replace the cover too?. i had this a few years back and with a new cover and clutch the problem was solved. if not your flywheel needs skimmimg as carl mentioned. better still put one of the lightened ones in

Bit more info on this guys.

Now the temperature outside has dropped the clutch judder has improved, but only when the car is cold. 5 minutes or so into a journey and the problem starts again, steadily getting worse.

Does this shed any more light on it? I'm going to rip it apart this weekend so fingers crossed i'll sort it!

There is the possibility that the clutch/gearbox splines are dirty, it depends how meticulous the mechanic was when he fitted the clutch. This may be stopping the plate from fully disengaging and breaking drive. Clutches are made and lifed as a unit these days, generally a three piece kit, plate, cover and bearing, and sold as that so I would suspect that they fitted the whole lot. One other thing, a bent input shaft could cause the same thing but the fault would be there all the time.

Right, i'm just in the middle of removing the box and i've noticed LOADS of play in the clutch arm, where it goes down into the box. Could this be the cause?

I was getting a lot of vibration in the pedal and it turned out the sheath on the cheapo clutch cable i'd fitted had melted so it wouldn't return properly.

Just a thought..?
