Well ive got my engine running and i think its got the dreaded tap. Sad

Thing is i cant remember what a normal engine sounds like its been so long and cant tell if its loud injectors or what but something isn't sounding right Dry

It increases in speed as the engine revs but doesn't really get any louder. Ive disconnected each injector in turn and that hasn't made any difference.

The timing hasn't slipped either and i dont think Nick at lynx would have cocked it up when he put it together No

One for carl this but would i still be able to hear it if i just crank the engine or is it not fast enough?? Ive done this and it sounds fine.

The sound is most noticeable at idle but im sure its not anything else as it defo seems to come from the fuel rail area/head. It doesn't sound like a deep tap but its not really a tick either.

Oil pressure to the head is good. Yes
Ive tried the screwdriver test and cannot locate the sound at all Sad

Bit gutted really the head was from James R who got it from pug racing aka miles and had some 3 angle valve seats cut at QEP so everyone involved are top blokes.

Will have to get the car taken to Carl i think to sort it out which is going to cost me an arm and a leg. Sad

Oh well thats life i guess.

Sure it's not just because the lifters aren't filled up/freed off properly?

often does take some time, is that 20 minutes at idle though? you'll not get that much pressure at idle.

could be a noisy bas**rd injector.

whip the cam covers off and see if any of the tappets are soft, they should be pumped up and have no clearance to the cam.

its been revved to about 3.5k max on and off. Oil has been up to temp twice now.

its on 10/40 magnatech

I was hoping it was an injector but ive disconnected each injector in turn and this didnt change anything apart from my engine nearly dieing Sad

same with coil packs

How loud are we talking?

Using a decent oil I take it?

Check the plugs are done up tight enough.

its not as bad as some of the vids ive been looking at i dont think but i just dont know. Sometimes i think oh its just the injectors and then i change my mind and think nah its tapping. If anyone is in the north west i would appreciate a second opinion and a comparison check to a sound engine. Its defo not plugs No

If you can only just make it out, I doubt its a tapper as they tend to be quite loud.

Could be loose plugs, very slightly bent valve, or lifters.

The MX-5 was the same when it'd been stood a while - it was on Magnatech too, and it'd formed some lovely black goop in the lifter, fookin shitty stuff... anyway, took a flush of oil and two 30 minute/3krpm warming up sessions to unstick it...

Its hard to diagnose without hearing the engine, i take it it runs fine but just has this tick, if you rev it and it gets more pronounced and the noise gets faster i would say you have the tap.

If you can pop a video on here i could take a listen for you, sometimes though its hard as recordings tend to pick up alot of other sounds you wouldnt notice.

I have my fingers crossed for you, you seem to have been through hell with this.

Carl

well its got the better of me and ive been and whipped tha covers off. The lifters are all pressed up to the cams and cant push them down Sad

Carl yeah it runs pretty well at moment nothing else seems to be wrong. But i havnt driven it yet and its a high boost engine so im taking my time with it. I know what you mean about videos been abit dodgy.

It does indeed get faster as you rev it but not really any louder.

How much do you charge to pick up a car from burnley??

Gutted for you, when I bought the head it was good, then had it checked by QEP when they did the seats so hopefully it's not the head. fingers crossed.

no worries man, Im still in disbelief of it being a bent valve but will hopefully have a vid in few hours.

When you say it was good when you bought it does this mean taken from a sound engine??

If its bent valves the only answer is worn guides or a valve that slipped the net. Dunno but both these point to a head with a not so desirable history.

I take it they lapped the valves in??

I had the same on my car with the same oil, It took a couple of flush's to free it then it was fine now its got a noisy injector instead Laugh

Hmm that does sound rather loud. can you post back with what you have checked, as you have some suggestions but no indication on whether youve tried them or not?

have checked lifters, plugs, unplugged each injector etc etc

the video really makes it sound shabba, im convinced its a bent valve now.

Only other possibile answer is the manifold gasket even though its new or the cat manifold join but the noise doesnt come from there. Its defo valve train noise.
