A couple of friends of mine are putting together a tiny track car. I seem to be spanner monkey. Be good to get it on track this year as it is difficult for us all to get to the "workshop" at the same time. I'll document the progress as it happens.

The awesome history of the 90's 500
Wikipedia

quote:
The Cinquecento was available in one body style only, a small, angular 3-door hatchback, with a favorable drag coefficient of only 0.33 that bore similariies to the Lancia Y10. It featured several advances compared to older Fiat city cars, including independent suspension both in the front and in the rear similar to the FIAT Tipo, front disc brakes, side impact bars along with crumple zones incorporated in the design and galvanized body panels to fend off corrosion. Steering was by rack and pinion, and although power steering was never offered, the car could be ordered with a number of extras, including central locking, power windows, sunroof (or full-length retractable canvas roof in the Soleil version) and even air conditioning.

The shell had a lot of stuff already stripped, it was someone else's track project before.

Some of the junk to remove

Wiring loom was removed without any cutting

Stripped interior, with roll cage tryout

The new engine is a Fiat 1.4 unit about 100 bhp before mods. It will have a new exhaust and induction initially, internals will be for the future.

This was picked up from a local company that does gearbox designing, surplus : )

Removing sound damping and underseal. I thought it was better to keep it on, but it weighs quite a bit. 90's Fiats are hopefully pretty rustproof LOL

We're hoping to get the final weight down to about 750 Kg

That will put us on a pretty tight schedule LOL

Work is somewhat haphazard at the moment, I think we need a meet or race to aim towards to get a bit focussed. Still with some warmer weather it could speed up.

Not done anything like this before, but I'm expecting a few mechanical headaches before it's running.

The start was fun with taking bits off ready for the roll cage. Some nice bits have been bought to go in it, but the main work at the moment is preparing the bodywork for a respray. Over the weekend I spent a few hours with one of the guys removing stone chip protection goo from the car. It felt like a lot of work until you saw how little had come off. Peter, the engineer amongst us is very concerned about weight, and is working on another project car to see how light we can make it. We're only going to take this stuff out once, but it's just so slow to do. I'll post up some pics when the car gets fresh paint and some nice new bits are bolted in.
