Hi guys,

Ive noticed that my engine lacks power compared to another standard 6.

It just doesnt throw you back at all when you plant your foot. It doesnt need a service, oil is still golden.

Does anyone know what parts or sensors it could be that causing this?

thanks

James

Old spark plugs, dirty air/fuel filter Dunno

How 'slow' is it?

well, its just lacking punch, it gets up to speed ok, but it certainly isnt performing like its got 167 break.

Another mate who has a gti said it didnt throw you back at all, like his did.

Its Budsowna old car, i think you know him?! I dont suppose you knwo if he had any issues with it?

I'll do the plugs, and wack some injector cleaner in there and a new standard air filter (K&N filter at moment).

It also seems a little too economical... which made me wonder if when i put my foot down, its not wacking enough fuel through...

I havnt a clue what sensors effect performance...

cheers Joker

mine doesnt seem to throw me back either, but it wipes floor with redtop corsas (non turbo) etc. So presume its right, might try fitting new filters, have to see.

might be incorrect valve timing.

dont like sound of that haha. would spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter make a difference though?

Mines KnN and it looks caked in muck, gave it a bash knock most off just need to find a cleaning kit for them locally.

Prob the K&N, if not it will certainly be contributing to it !

I had a copy cat ( Whistle No pun intened ) It did lack pull compared standard cat and more so compared to the decat. More so higher up the rev range. Not mega noticeable as it still pulled well. Mind you I did replace the exhaust with a Mongoose system at the same time as the decat. It pulls like a train now. Smile

Yours sounds more like a duff sensor somewhere. Yes

Added together that might explain your missing bhp. I have an Arvin backbox on mine, and it already sounds like its on its way out.

thanks for all the replys guys

Im going to give it full service (it isnt really due one), new NGK plugs etc. see if that makes any difference, then take it down to Carl for a once over... If somethings a miss im sure he'll find it... worth the drive for the piece of mind

It has what looks to be a timex/arvin exhaust on it.

I'll check the throttle cables right too.

anyone had this kind of issue and it been down to a sensor?

Also my air filter is a K&N in the standard air box, would this sap power? i thought it would add to it.

thanks again guys, love this forum.

Im in the same boat, standard motor with recent full service, standard pattern exhaust fitted. It isnt too bad bottom end like some ive driven, but the in gear acceleration is lacking (5500 to 7000). Ive only ever experienced two rallyes before, both with performance exhaust and k&ns and they both had a good whack of torque above 5k. The cam timing is ok, fitted new crank damper pulley to be sure. The performance was no better with the original exhaust fitted either. Its a right money pit, next job is the heavy clutch, then i will get to the bottom of it. Have tryed a different map senser which made no difference. The diagnostic machine says its in full throttle mode when foot is planted. Will be a case of rolling road, checking compressions and driving with cat back exhaust off.

Had my throttle body cleaned out, a new Map sensor plus O2 sensor feels like it has got a lot more torque now.

I too have the same problem. Mine is running a health 176 BHP but lacks vastly on torque. Decat not helping. I have a pipercross system which i am in the process of removing. This should help. Nick at lynx set all my valve timeing correctly as it was out, and i still have no difference. Must just be that some are stronger than others. Not sure what next too do. My sparks are good, havent cleaned my injectors but i have a new map new o2, idle control ect. Mite try cleaning the throttle body. How did you do this Spitfire just take off and clean??

cam timing Thumbs up

advancing the inlet helps, though exactly how much to do so for what results is somewhat of a mystery, didn't help that the cams were not all identical apparently.

have been emaning for a while to whip AdamB's timing belt covers off and see what Andy Gwynne did as his car has both good power AND Torque.

I noticed a difference on mine when I fitted a pattern cat instead of the knackered genuine one. It just seemed to be a bit strangled at the top end, but still had good torque. The pattern cat was noticably smaller than the oe one.
