Over the next couple of weeks major work will be going on 6 wise. I am going to change the power steering fluid and would just like confirmation as i think I know how but dont want to mess it up!

So,
1. Remove return hose from PAS fluid reservoir, and attach a hose to a suitable container.
2. Start engine, get pump running etc and move wheels a little and until all fluid is drained out.
3. Add a little to the reservoir to flush through any remaining junk and flush through.
4. Stop car.
5. Take reservoir cap off and get fluid ready, start car and slowly fill up the reservoir, moving wheel to pump through better filling to max level. Replace cap.
6. Go for a drive and test!

So, is that basically about right and when I get it done shall I take pics for an FAQ?

whatever you do DO NOT run the PAS pump without fluid, you'll destroy it very quickly as the oil lubricates the insides.

unhook the pipe from the pump, and at the other end where it goes to the rack, IIRC this is the lowest point on the system so if you drain it from here you should get most of it out.

at the resevoir take one of the pipes off, (unsure of which ione, whichever is the lower one!) and drain it.

when its all empty stick a bit of copper grease on all the unions (on the threads and where the union clamps and turns on the pipes)

then fill up the resevoir and turn the steering from lock to lock slowly (both wheels in the air) when youre satisfied you have got nearly all the air out start her up and again turn the steering from lock to lock, keeping an eye on the fluid level.

Let it cool down and re-check the levels.

I changed mine using a turkey baster (large syringe). I remove all the old fluid from the resevoir then re-filled with new. Ran the car for 5 minute then repeated. You can get the Syringe from Tesco's!!

If the old fluid is left in the pipes how does that mix with the new fluid? I don't understand how the PAS fluids flow ... is it like brakes? or does the fluid return to the master cylinder?

the pump pumps at high pressure to the rack and sucks fluid from the reservoir, return pipe from the PAS rack goes to reservoir.

not an ideal process described above as you'll still have a fair bit of old fluid mixed in instead of just disconnecting the pipes at the ram and draining them.

that will help drain the rack and pas ram yes, the pipes should rain themselves though.

may help to disconnect the pipes on the PAS pump as well.

yup, with deft fingers and careful use you can clip them back together if they're the type I think they are, like on the fuel rail?

Holy thread bump indeed...

I want to drain fluid from the reservoir so I can remove it to paint the bits underneath it and was hoping I didn't have to drain the whole system. So with reference to welshpug's comment on NOT running the pump without fluid in it, can the system be drained without the engine turned on and will the fluid run naturally from the lowest pipe at the rack end?

I actually thought of a turkey baster to remove fluid from the tank then clamp hoses before removal. Never mind!

You don't need to drain the whole system bri, your turkey baster is a good idea to keep the mess down!LOL

Just take as much out of the res as you can, disconnect pipes and put a container under them for drips.

Then when you re-fit just fill the res to max,the res is higher than the pump so it will gravity fill, fire up the engine and leave to tickover for a few seconds, then turn the steering from one lock to the other a few times to bleed the system, check your fluid and job done.Thumbs up
