So has it actually been decided which tank is best and how best to fit it? Do we need one with a filter in top or is that really surplus to requirements?

the mocal ones are the best and u guessed it the most expensive. They have a patented filter/breather on the top which is designed to let it breath but hold some back pressure. They also look a million times less tacky than any others ive seen.

interested. mocal? this fit?

I like the look of Jose's catch tank- it looks almost OEM. I need to get one on mine as my K&N is getting soaked! would the ECU compensate for any air/fuel ratio change from blocking off the mani inlet/feeding it cleaner air from a vented tank?

the pipe on the right hand side of the 2, on the rocker cover, it splits into 2 a bit further down, can anybody tell me if these are both breathers and if it would be ok to take this straight to the catch tank aswell as the one from the rocker cover??
thanbks

Sorry to bump this thread, but is the above the correct way to fit?

Seems good to me, but what about a filter, is one needed?

Does anything else need to be done that can't be seen in the picture?

Cheers

PhillipM advised to attach it after the regulator (one way valve thing).

Very nice but the filter iv read can muck up the engine bay a treat, im going to do the same as above apart from having the filter on the end of a pipe going down the front of the engine tied up, the smell will go under rather then into the cabin. Then just block off the inlet outlet.

This negative pressure seems odd when the inlet air ie oil vapour goes into the bores anyways. So it'll just go into the tank and the filter will be like as if it's going into the bores.

Mine is now fitted and it has definitely made a difference in power, well worth it IMO.

Not only has the oil vapour gone but this vapour would also be warm, so effectively it has made the incoming air cleaner and cooler, can't recommend this mod enough, noticeably more power and will see by how much when I have another rolling road test done, last one came at 174.7 BHP two weeks ago.

Although I still have to fit the new alu rad to make engine nearer to the ideal 83 c temp where that temp makes these engine's perform at their best.

Ill do a thread with all the info soon.

The trouble is with having no vacuum draw of the crankcase gasses is that you are relying on blow by pressure to push out the fumes/moisture etc.
On a nasp engine you do not get much blow by.
Race engine's get away with it due to the temps the oil gets too and also regular oil changes.
A road car engine will not get hot enough on every trip to evaporate moisture from the crank case and it will end up collecting in your cam covers.
A oil seperator is the best bet, that seperates liquids and retains them in the can,and the gasses get sucked into inlet.
Since fitting mine the tb/inlet is oil/gunk free, and I have got about half a jar full of water/gunk out the seperator after aprox 6 months use.
Run a empty catch can with no vacuum draw for 6 months and see what you get in it!!! Not alot is the answer as the moisture/gunk is in your crank case still mixing nicely with your oil!Yes

Good job these are fitted with a windage tray then lol. Car has regular oil changes anyway. My oil always gets too 100c and use ester oil to help cope with these temps, I dont use an oil cooler yet and if I did id use a thermostat type. Engine has done 40k in its life.

Engine running there is plenty of smells coming from the filter strapped on underneith, I will check the tank regularly though. I might get some mesh inside the outlet tank connection bit. Tank is also a small one.

So what would you suggest, I fix the filter pipe to the inlet section, this would defeat the whole point of it though.

Oil or water dont actually pour into the pipe, just vapour and since I can small and feel the air coming through the filter this should be enough. This vapour when inside the tank it should make it condensate and collect it.

Do you mean something like this >

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-ILF-SE-In-Line-Water-Oil-Trap-Filter-Seperator-/360403889574?pt=UK_Air_Tools_and_Compressors&hash=item53e9beeda6

or this >

Then pipe up the outlet pipe to the inlet with the filter within this line ?

It woukd defeat the object connecting the empty catch can to the inlet yeah, but not a proper seperator that has seperated liquids from gassesThumbs up

These work really well:

http://www.saikoumichi.com/OCC_explanation.htm

Not cheap but you do see the results when you drain itYes

Used a cheaper one on rallye off e-bay:

http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=148753

Got loads of gunk in it when running 10w40 semi synthetic, half as much now running 5w50 fully syntheticThumbs up

Yeah used the twin one on Evo as they run two breather outletsThumbs up

http://www.saikoumichi.com/DC3_page.htm

Just joined a group buy on Briscoda for a single can one with sight glass and 19mm outlets for my VRSSmile

The one on Evo worked really well, but a turbo charged engine does breath more than a nasp due to the forced air passing piston rings.

Well iv had my standard oil catch tank in for a good few weeks now with use of the car 2 or 3 times a week not a daily driver.

Here are a few pictures of what mine has been like during this short time, seems very different to your experience and i'm not quite sure why, maybe its because my engine had done very few miles during its lifespan Dunno

Here is the cam outlet with no mayo >

Here is the catch tank inlet with the mayo >

Here is the catch tank fluid amount, tank is at a slight angle to show just how much mine has collected up during this short time. basically the fluid has come up to the lowest part of the amount showing pipe in picture >

Even with this I have now fitted the small oil/water separator catch tank which looks neater, it just goes to show these standard oil catch tanks can work just as well without the inlet air feed Yes
