I'd planned on doing a proper FAQ of this but the card in the camera died and I couldn't rescue all the photos Sad

Anyway, the siren was annoying me somewhat as it would go off on it's own any time of the day or night, just noise no flashing lights. Info from [shameless plug]www.306gti6.com[/shameless plug] led me to believe the batteries in the siren had died.

Taking the siren out showed the top Mexican quality build quality as there wasn't enough potting compound to cover the batteries or two capacitors so I'm surprised it had lasted as long as it did. Pushing the multimeter probes through the potting onto the batteries showed two dead cells so I thought I'd have a go at fixing it.

Out with the craft knife and cut around the cells. Fingers crossed that I didn't slice anything I shouldn't!

Taking the cells out showed that one of the dead cells had leaked and corroded the board.

Cleaned out the rest of the potting and took as much of the corrosion off as possible.

The cells that cam out were 1/3 height AA Ni-Cads. A rather helpful company that my Dad used to buy his batteries off had this size available but only in NiMH cells. I didn't think it would matter so I forked out £7 and went for them.

I told the Strikalite guys how I needed them joined together and they did this for me free of charge Thumbs up

That's the last of the photos I'm afraid Sad

Anyway, I charged the new battery pack separately before I soldered it to the wires. The extra length on the leads allowed me to put down a bed of bathroom silicon to which I pushed the new battery pack into. The remaining voids were then filled with more silicon and the capacitors were covered too.

Reattaching to the car and not a peep out of the unit. A whole week has gone by and the alarm has only gone off once, this time properly with lights. Overall I'm happy with the fix and if it lasts 6 years like the original battery then I'm happy with that Yes

    yeah, no problem - clicky - product ID: 26 about ¾ the way down the page.

    i sorted it out over the phone and got the pack posted to me a couple of days later, but as strikalite is in burntwood (about half way between cannock and lichfield) it wouldn't have been too far out of my way to pick it up in person.

    Erm? can't remember, i did this last wekeend.

    it should be blinding obvious though if you're looking at the pack, one side will have a flat bottom an the other will have a nipple. the only thing to note is the third connection between the two sticks or three cells, but then once you've dug out the potting you should be able to see the connectors.

    yeah, two sticks of three cells.

    i've got some radio controlled cars that used 7.2v subC battery packs so i used my charger from that.

    as far as i see there's no reason why you can't connect it all up and set it charging on the car as it would normally.

    Sorry to spam on this thread - I'll edit my first posts to pretend I knew what was going on all along and just filled in the pics once Im sorted Big grin

    Another silly question - how did you know it was 7.2 V? I see the cells in the siren are AA size, is it not possible to just get the right voltage with 2 AA sized rechargables? Unsure

    i wouldn't pay too much attention to the colour of the wires, i used whatever scraps i could find.

    as can be made out on post #6, there are 6x 1.2v 1/3 height AA. 3 joined end to end make a battery the same size as one normal AA cell but with 3.6v. two of these stacks side by side make 7.2v

    edit: you pic is correct but i cant remember is it's brown+ black- or black+ brown-. just pay attection to which way the old cells came out and you can't go wrong.

    Ah i see - the cells from the siren are already made up of 2 banks of 3. Sorry im a bit slow on the uptake tonight Doh

    OK I soldered the replacement cell in this lunchtime but my skills are so poor Im ashamed to post any pics. LOL

    Gonna see if it actually works before I bother getting the sealant on it Big grin

    The date code means the batteries were MADE in week 13 of 1999.

    Just had a go at mine, and i made a cock up! The batteries had leaked acid all over the inside so i removed all the sealent....
    ....and a piece of the electronic jiggeryWhistle
    Managed to work out its a 3-Terminal Adjustable Voltage Regulator and just ordered some from maplins. But i don't know which way around it was fitted flat side in or flat side out? Don't suppose anybody has noticed on theirs have they?? its a small black D shaped thingie about 5mm high by 4mm wide and has the code LM317, LZ and A9735, its very close to a resistor shaped like a dumb bell with coloured bands around it Crazy
