I've had a batch of these cam pulley locking tools machined, tested one on an engine i've just built and it worked a treat.

These are £40 each delivered within the UK, if you order from outside the UK the price will increase slightly to cover the extra postage costs.

Stupid question time but reading the FAQ here,

http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=40662&page=1

It says to loosen the Cam Pulley's so that the can move how can this be done if they are locked,

11. Rotate the cam pulleys fully clockwise, they sit in an elongated slot. These will rotate back round when you tension the belt and ensure the tension of the belt between the cams is correctly set.

12. Locate new timing belt onto crank sprocket and feed round the roller and onto inlet cam pulley, try and do this with minimal slack. Feed onto exhaust pulley and then finally round tensioner and water pump. Fit lower timing cover and put back on the crank pulley with pin.

13. Turn tensioner anti-clockwise using 8mm sump key. As you tension the belt you will see the cam pulleys rotate anti-clockwise. Keep going until you can twist the belt between inlet and roller by about 75 degrees. If you can twist it more it's too loose, if you can't twist it 45 degrees it's too tight and will cause premature failure of all components. Check the vid link below.

Or does this not need to be done,

I have a mate of mine who is a good mechanic arranged to do my belt and I am bricking it with all the horror stories about belts, He is very good but I doubt he has done a Gti Belt before,

The cams will be locked in place with the 6mm pins and crank locked with 8mm pin, so you want the cam bolts to be finger tight during step 13 in that guide which allows the pulleys to rotate within their allowed window. Once you have the belt to the correct tension and the tensioner bolt nipped up you then fit this locking tool to lock the pulleys together and then torque up the cam bolts.
Once the cam bolts have been torqued you want to remove the tool before trying to rotate the crank (remove the locking pins too).

Once again you want to fit the tool for step 16 when you torque the cam bolts.

Hopefully my attempt at explaining this makes sense Laugh

I'm even more confused now 🤔

I'll print out the FAQ and show it to him, my locking tool is gone for some winter sun so I might not even have it by the time we go to do it,

Do I understand correctly this tool ensures that the cam pulleys do not move at all when adjusting the spanner and tightening the cam bolts? Without the might move a bit?

Yes you're understanding right. The dodgy way to do it is to purely rely on the locking pins in the cams and crank pulley and tighten the cam bolts like that but this will put a lot of strain on things and you'll notice everything wanting to turn which can throw the timing out.
If you keep the cam locking pins in place whilst you tension the belt, then fit the locking tool and clamp the pulleys then tighten the cam bolts everything will stay as it should be. Then you remove the locking tool and locking pins to turn the engine over by hand to make sure everything lines back up as it should after a few crank rotations.

I've done the timing job on a j4rs tenths of times (on both the old and new setup) but I can see the usefulness of this for the uncertain mechanic. I've personally used a counterhold tool for the cam gears without any problems and the locking tools slide in place without any force after the few turns to check it again.

BUT I could see myself using one of these is with a engine with aftermarket camshafts which have been precise timed with vernier pulleys and a dial gauge. You could turn the bottom end to the locking spot, then use this tool to lock the cam gears in place in relation to each other and swap the belt. The adjusted timing should stay spot on if the cams were timed with a new belt in the first place.

On a standard engine it's not about the timing as that's locked in place. It's about getting the belt tension correct and evenly distributed across the length of the belt. If the cam pulleys move when you tighten the centre pulley bolt you will have incorrect distribution of belt tension which could contribute to a belt failure or the engine jumping a tooth.

Peugeot have (or had - not sure if they still carry it) a tool exactly like this only made out of hard rubber.
