Hi,

Got a problem which I'm a bit worried about. The other day I was driving, not exactly in traffic, but definitely not fast, and my oil started to get really hot.

The interesting thing is that the coolant was absolutely fine. I got it home and turned the car off, but the oil reached around 120 degrees, which I don't think Iver ever seen it do before.

I'm worried it could potentially be a HG problem - but can't see any white smoke, no mayo on the oil cap, no pressure in the coolant, and coolant level does seem a bit low though.

I'm going to change the oil ASAP, but just wondering what your thoughts were on this?

Maybe the oil temp sensor failing? Maybe worth testing that first?

That's a good shout thanks mate, annoyingly the sensor testing faq doesn't have any the oil temp sensor in there!

If you get a resistance reading at a known temperature I’m sure myself or someone else can compare it to a known good one.Thumbs up

I seemed to have fixed this! Changed the oil and temperature now doesn't want to go over 91/92 degrees which is great. Should have seen the oil that came out, was obviously a long way past an oil change - thankfully it wasn't sludgy though.

So it still seems to be doing this.

Oil temp sender has been changed, oil has been changed twice, both fans working as they should. But the oil temperature still seems to keep rising when driving.

I can't see it being HG issues but then again I might not really know unless I do a compression or sniff test.

Could it be an oil pump issue? Worth me taking the sump off to have a look? Maybe the pickup is clogged?

It gets to 90 as I'd expect, but then it just keeps rising. I've seen it get to 120 which seems far too hot? This was only driving around Bristol and not exactly in traffic either.

Can a sunny day cause oil temps to shoot up?

what oil are you running and is the heat exchanger still fitted?

The oil is total 7000, and the heat exchanger is still there. Not running an oil cooler though.

Took it for a spin to BnQ today - coolant temp was climbing but successfully cooled back down once the fans kicked in. Oil got to almost 95, and looked like it was going to continue rising.

Left it idling at home for 10 mins and the oil settled right back down to 91ish and didn't move.

Obviously there was only 5 degrees difference but it didn't fill me full of confidence that it wouldn't have just got hotter and hotter.

Feels like the oil cooling is a bit inneficient? Although it is a very hot day so hotter oil is to be expected when driving about?
