My car was hit on the offside quarter panel by a HGV and I've managed to get a brand new quarter panel off ebay for £200.

Would it be best to replace it whole, just replace the bottom half, or just repair the original panel?

This is a massive job so hate to think what a body shop would charge. To replace the whole panel means lifting the roof and also the rear of the boot as the panel meets everywhere. I did mine by cutting out a panel and welding in a sizeable repair patch as did not want to get involved in the roof etc

Do you butt up the new and old metal or do some kind of overlap?

Effectively butt up (tiny/gap for the weld). Good welder helps so can set low spot avoid blowing holes

Hope this can be repaired easily (not to costly):

Does not have to be a super duper job, just so that it looks okay. I do not mind is some part need filler... it is my trackday tool after all.

Will ask a welder to do the same as you. Only need to source a good panel on a scrape yard.

f**k, what a shame. I guess there will be problems for that bloke going on a track with a rented car. Has to be retarded anyway racing an unknown car. I hope it turns out good for both of you.

Yep. Well he will be paying his coinsurance (few 1000 euros).

My insurance company told me they cannot guarantee it will be successful (as it happened on a race track) but most likely the rental company needs to pay the damage.

Was it a genuine panel? If so what part number did you have as I have some new genuine 306 quarter panels but different numbers on identical looking panels.

Mine is 8526Q4 and suitable for phase 2 and 3 according to Servicebox.
