Hi & Thanks in advance guys

Got a rallye which has been fitted with a xsara vts engine. The engine had the 137 tooth belt set up with plastic tensioner.
main question does the xsara have a different flywheel as after converting to the older type pulleys with the 10mm's and the metal tensioner with 136 tooth belt the engine wont fire. Chugs and bangs as if it wants too which leads me to think timing is at fault. Timing has been checked numerous times with alloy pulley, no way it could be out.

any ideas?

Regards

Has this only happened since you did the belt swap ? Or is this a replacement engine you’ve fitted ?

Its a replacment engine from someone on here, was previously charged (low boost) so was deffo running, its had valves etc done recent by the looks of it. compression seems fine. ive obviously done the belt change before fitting the engine so its the only thing i can think of

Same flywheel
Fuel lines round the correct way ?

When you changed the belt I assume you got the correct mount for the manual adjuster ??

Have you got spark and a pulse on the injectors?

Well if you have spark fuel and air it should fire so check compression

Also are you using the Gti6 injectors ?

If you have spark and fuel but it's not firing, I would check the cam timing and compression.

Silly question, is your battery good?

Another silly thing to check when I refit my engine a few years ago I went to start up and had chugging and banging but it wouldn't run more than 2 seconds. I checked the earth leads from battery to the gear box and also on the chassis legs. Sorted them out and it fired and ran perfectly

Update, Ive re done new earths, changed the engine loom from another ph2 6 i had in the yard, switched back to the 137 tooth belt set up still nothing, It coughed once for a split second and thats it. compression test shows 14 bar across all 4. spark plugs are soaked in fuel so i removed inlet so i could see valves opening and closing which they are. Ive still got a spark and injectors are working so now im still scratching my head?

i dont suppose anyone has a photo of there rallyes fuse box and relays? Wondeing if maybe someone has pinched a relay or fuse since the car was in a corner doing nothing for a long time

cheers

Presuming you have double checked all the relay and connections
When you changed the loom
Have you tried a alternative duel relay ??

"as after converting to the older type pulleys with the 10mm's"

on the early cam pulleys i think the centre boss is specific to inlet or exhaust they are not swappable

although they fit!

i maybe wrong

the later pulleys being stronger are the ones i would run with now as i had a failure with the earlier type

Have you got a spare unlocked ecu? If so I would try that and the double relay behind battery box

Timing not 180 out is it?

If you are sure on timing, have spark and fuel with good compression it can only be a bad sensor like crank or cam, something that's needed to start. It sure which of the two is essential for start, crank I would think.

yes you are wrong, both are the same on an RS head, j4R has one the same as RS and one different hub.

I too had thought this...Yes

However, if the crank sensor was faulty then you wouldn't get a spark.

For the sake on sanity, have you checked the inertia switch? Just press the red button and see if it fires up? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be sparking / pumping fuel if the switch is off but you never know.
