Awesome, keep posting pictures up of both projects. Thumbs up
I've been toying with the idea of transverse and rwd the last few weeks myself.

I have toyed with buying an engine of pug heaven as he has a 406 v6 turbo making 480 bhp
Also a t5 volvo as they make very good power reliably and parts are inexpensive

I was thinking of staying XU10 but fitting the gearbox off something designed for the sort of power i want from the factory, probably an e46 m3 as the gearbox and rear diff seem reasonably affordable on ebay in comparison to the e92 equivalents. Pretty sure the e46 engine rotation is the same as the XU10 too so i wouldn't end up with loads of reverse gears Laugh

wouldnt need an M3 box, any bmw box would do really, seen Diesel boxes used on electric conversions so they can cope witha bit of torque.

inclination of the engine is similar but location of the oil pump may cause issues, dry sump probably simplifies things a lot.

Yeah, I've been looking at dry sump setups, might need to somehow make a custom setup since I'll be using my own crank pulley causing the pump drive sprocket to be in a different position.

It'll be ages before I start doing anything on mine anyway, got another project to start before any of this LOL

Could be interesting. What V8 would you be looking at? Rover 4.2 V8? Bang an Eaton on top. Loads of roar!

Or perhaps a Toyota 1uz as they are easy to get 5-600 out of

Hi Ross, are you sure you want 500bhp in that?! I had a 490bhp LS build in a 3dr Sierra, and it was an animal. I couldn't conceive that sort of motor in something as small as a 306. It had 480lb/ft of torque, but already 400lb/ft at 1500rpm.. :0

I also found myself chasing all the necessary bits and pieces to make it all work; TKO600 gearbox, 10.5" diff, custom driveshafts, custom rad, ECU, drive by wire throttle, custom loom, etc etc. It cost tens of thousands of pounds and took years to do. When I finished, I didn't even like driving it - it worked in such a narrow window of conditions that the rest of the time (without a team of mechanics on it to adjust everything, change springs etc) it was little fun.

I wouldn't want to pour cold water on your ambitions mate, but I could have just hit myself with a £30k loan and be driving something pretty special the next day, (and enjoying it) rather than spending 9 years going through so many iterations before being fully completed - and not totally loving the outcome...

No problem Ian. It’s more to be a scary machine that can be built up over time to be quick in the end always wanted a v8 muscle car and why not use the 306 as a base a lot of the hard work is done. Sadly my white Rallye has already cost far more than that, probably should have bought the 911 turbo I keep promising myself, would probably save me a lot of money in the long run.

Much better you put your stamp and personality on the car....buying a 911 as great a car as it is ...boring quickly and not your own work Ross Crazy

Yes I bought this off Cjgti6, it has a sierra cosworth rear end. Full gaz coil overs the Rollcages is scrap but the transmission tunnel and bulkhead modifications are good. Funnily enough if I do the ls v8 I could fit a carb conversion to make wiring a bit easier to begin with. Anyone else recommend decent engines for big bhp for this conversion?

you really would struggle to beat an LS for size/bhp, tons of stuff available for them, only downside is its all from america or australia.

given its mostly ford based then a ford cosworth would be the immediate thing that springs to mind.

The XU10 is still used to this day for the rallycross supercars with a 45mm restrictor and running 550-600 bhp, granted, these are proper big bucks builds.

whilst a big part of it is the building, I don't think a 911 would get boring, because you really can just get out there and use it, though to get one that's properly quick, that's also big big money.

I’m swinging towards a 1uz as they make good power and are 80kgs lighter than the ls1 adapter plates readily available for bmw gearboxes too. It will be 1/2 way through the year till I can make real headway with this one though.
