Hi everyone,

First post here. I've been to a track day today at donnington in my low boost supercharged gti6. Unfortunately i hadn't had my car noise tested as it's not road legal, so took it on the off chance, but it failed the drive by noise limits. I didn't have a static test though. 2 readings, one was 101dba and the 2nd was 103dba. Track day organisers were unhelpful and wouldn't disclose the location of the mic's and wasnt allowed back on. A waste of £240 :-/

Anyone got any idea what sort of exhaust system i could get that would be supercharger friendly but also below 98dba?

Simon

Get a 3 inch system and a box that goes the whole length of the car that's what I've done? Someone said they used a jetex exhaust and said it was quiet.

what have you got on there now?

i doubt you need 3" on low boost, they're only 240-250 bhp, 2.5" works fine, something like Magnex will be quiet enough if in good condition, AdamB has been on Combe with his. (we did re-pack the middle box)

I'm running 240 ish n-a through a Milltek and the intake is much louder, though no idea on the Db levels.

probably needs cutting open and re-packing like most then, or fitting new boxes.

Thanks guys. I know i need to do something, was gutted to be turfed off after driving the 6 properly for the first time since it was finished being built.

Not sure what system i have now as it was already on the car when i brought it, but it has a oval outlet on the back box. It has a Decat but still has the center box, however i think it might be a custom system as there is no joins anywhere.

Is there much room underneath to get bigger boxes fitted? I also think magnex would be louder than mine (pretty sure my brother in law's 6 has magnex backbox and it's loud as f**k).

loads of room if you put the rear box across the boot floor.

magnex shouldnt be that loud but they are all really old now and werent particularly expensive units new, most I have seen recently have needed at least the middle box repacking.

Find an exhaust fabricator. They will do what you want. I got a cat-back system built for my low boost with 'track use' in mind. So he built 2.5" all the way through including the tip as he said a larger tip could have a trumpet effect. I'm yet to get it tested but he assured me it will be good for track use.

For off the peg go Jetex. Magnex are much louder and boomy.
Is there a chance intake noise was triggering it rather than exhaust noise?

It could be intake noise too, it screams at full chat. Anything I can do about the intake noise? It has a round k&n type filter on the end of the inlet so it's definitely a source for most of its noise.

As for the exhaust, would using the spare wheel space underneath for a large box be the way to go?

So mine is a group N skid plated old magnex 2.25" two boxes with a decat.

Static at combe was 89db at 4750rpm. Not sure they used a driveby that day, but it's not overly loud.
Jetex and blueflame are supposed to be good for noise, there are a variety of magnex, most are loud. Yours sounds strange as I've only ever seen a longlife be one whole piece, two boxes, oval tip but it was very loud

Pretty sure a k&n won't send you over the noise limit.

My intake is nowhere near as loud as my exhaust! I wouldn't even consider it to be an issue tbh.

From when mine was charged I couldn't ever see the intake being loud enough to cause any issues with noise levels as wouldn't say it was much louder than stock intake wise.

As others have said ...it won't be intake DBs Thumbs down .....
It will be your first box under the handbrake needs cutting open & repacking again ...it burns & blows out of that box & all it needs is that ....get the tailpipe box looked at also ..

I'm not Charged ...but my full on race engine after exhaust repacking only omits 89dbs at 4500 rpm & is Stainless that seems to have a different tinnier sound Whistle

Right. Exhaust is off, it's a longlife cat back system. Do you think repacking the midbox and backbox with acoustafil will lower the noise enough? Or should I bite the bullet and get another system?

Is anyone willing to swap a longlife for a jetex? ;-)

its worth a go if the boxes are a reasonable size, not seen how the longlife are packed but the Magnex has a layer of steel wool around the perforated tube then glass pack for the rest.
