I'm considering replacing the steering rack on my Rallye to improve the steering 'lock to lock' as the power steering has started leaking I believe it's the ram thought it worth killing 2 birds...

Is it more or less a like for like change? I.E. will the rack ends for the Rallye (bought a pair a few months ago) fit the VTS rack?

Great upgrade that suits the Rallye in my opinion. I've not found any downside to it.

I can't remember if I didn't put my old gti6 ram on the vts rack to keep the correct amount of steering lock.

You'll need the ram from your old steering rack or when you fit the xsara one it'll knock on the gearbox

The TRE's are the same on the VTS rack but the track rod arms are shorter. Easy enough to swap the GTI arms in though

This is arguably my favourite modification. I hate the slow standard rack

What parts of the rack will I actually benefit from then? Doesn't look like there is much to the rack without the ram?

The gearings different inside a VTS to standard ....but the reason you need the ram changed is a VTS has a 5speed box & doesn't need restricting on right lock but the 6 or Rallye does have a 6speed box which is wider & that ram stops only the wheel from rubbing the outside of the box on right lock Thumbs up

I kinda worked that out to be honest Damien but I'm a little stumped on what is actually of benefit from the VTS rack? If the ram is different and you fit a gti6 ram to a VTS rack surely that's the main component what's the difference in the racks that makes the improve?

I'd appreciate it if someone has the knowledge of the part numbers needed to get all the relevant individual parts to convert it!? Probabaly wishful thinking LOL

The rack and pinion is geared at a different ratio, so you get more turn of the wheels of the car for the same amount of steering input ie. you don't have to turn the steering wheel as much to turn the wheels "quicker" steering.

As I said it's the Rack that's the main difference not the Ram that stops the wheel from hitting the wider box ...VTS 1 = 2.4 turns of wheel
VTS 2= 2.6 turns of the wheel
Standard 6 rack = something like 3.1 turns of the wheel ...as said it may be 3.6 ?

I run VTS 1 as it's more direct fit & you can use your old bolt on6 pipe work unlike VTS 2 where you change to VTS ones ...
I don't run power steering & it's a b**ch in the paddocks to turn slow with 205 tyres

Basically much quicker response & less turn of the wheel to where your going Thumbs up

so Ideslly phase 1 rack from a VTS... great! Im not desperate for it As the Rallye is parked up and I've hardly used it since I bought it 11 months ago. Would be nice to have it sorted in the next month or so. Then I've got the Heater matrix to fix LOL

I thought the standard rack was 3.6 turns but others may be able to confirm. I have the VTS Ph2 rack which is 2.6 turns and it suits the car perfectly. The pipework was no major drama to swap over though I would have got the Ph1 2.4 rack for simplicity had I been able to find one at the time.

The rack looks externally identical to the standard one, but the internal gearing is different. The original rack was by no means bad (the 1980s Audi quattros I used to love had slow racks but you got used to it). But a faster rack in a Rallye makes the car feel even more intuitive and adjustable than normal. Traversing a roundabout can be done with a slight flexing of the wrists, but stability at motorway speeds is unaffected - it does not make the car twitchy. I like the slightly heavier steering. As I said above, a quicker rack suits the character of the car IMO.

I think the standard rack is 3.6 turns on a standard 306 ram with the GTi-6 rack as this is more representative for comparison to the VTS rack due to the symmetrical lock.

I can see your going to run power steering Thumbs up

All I can tell you is (don't) anybody run a phase 1 / 2-4 without power steering as I have ....Prescott hill climb was a nightmare & my arms were buggered for days after ......it's great when your on trackdays but a total ball ache driving on the road & moving the car around the paddocks Crazy ...I may go back to standard 3.6 now I'm not running power steering otherwise I will need a 2 foot steering wheel or arms like Arnie
